OT Ya gotta check out this dog
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:58:20 AM »
My nine year old Grandson came to live with us....along with his dog which he named "Baby Dog" as a puppy.  Anybody here got a hunting dog named "Baby Dog"?  She looks like a lab-setter cross, and if she works grouse half as well as the chickens, she'll be great.  The two big problems are she's gun shy and her name.  Can you guys see me running around the woods calling "Over here Baby Dog".....give me a break. ::)   I'm working on the gun shy part, and I think by fall she should be fine.

Cal her Dog, it's already half her name might be a little easier for her to catch on to it. and your buddy's wont look at you funny.

The funny thing is I inherited a dog named "Dog" from a friend who died.  She was dumped on his doorstep as a pup and he never intended to keep her....so, he called her "Dog".  That was eight or nine years ago.  After he died a year ago and we got her, Patty and I decided she was too sweet a lady to be named Dog.  So we called her "Dottie"..."Dorothy" when she's super good.  At the moment, we have six dogs.....all of them were unwanted or strays whose owners we couldn't find.

Well there Peter...  We have a Baby Girl here (A Lahsa Apaso)

Story is, she was a stray, wandered into the yard and never left... Well we did not want to get too attached as we figured her owner would turn up... We started calling here baby girl and it stuck. That was three years ago.

PS she LOVED the chickens!! She will sit there for hours, just watching!

The dog is great, but that's a neat Hen ya got there CW.   She's a spunky gal.

That's part of our south alfalfa field in the pictures.  It's 400 yards from the chickens to the treeline, so you can see why I have to be able to shoot long.

Pete,
It's great to see Spring finally blessed you with it's presence. Given the dog's natural ability to hunt it will be worth the trouble of teaching it to obey a new name.

Thanks, Dinny

To my Grandson, she'll always be Baby Dog.  I've started calling her B.D. and she seems to respond to it.

We had "Summer" last week, "Winter" again on Mothers Day with a couple of inches of snow.  "Spring" today and yesterday.  Supposed to freeze tonight. ??? ??? ??? ???   My long johns and I are trying to figure it out.

My Puggle just turned one, her name is Sierra but she'll come to "little dog" too.  My Brittany died last summer, his name was Samson but I called him "dog" about half the time and he would come to either.  Dogs respond better to a name with three syllables, according to the "experts".

To make this thread Handi related  ;), I bought my first Handi to gun train Samson.  It was a .410 out of the used rack I paid I think $55 for it in 2001, it's a 1999 model.  It's now my main 357 Maxi. for deer.

I give this advice to all dog owners who aren't hunters.  This procedure will not only gun break a hunting dog but also condition the family pet to loud noises like thunder.

After you put down the bowl of food move to the other side of the room or next room with two books, pans, blocks of wood, anything you can beat together that makes a loud sharp noise.  Hit them together one time and ignore the dog.  It'll be startled but will ignore the noise when you do and go back to eating.  Repeat this every time you feed the dog slowly moving closer to the dog over two weeks for a dog that isn't anxious and three weeks for the anxious ones.  After two weeks doing this with Samson when he was a pup I could stand beside him while he was eating and beat two books together.  He would just continue eating.

Maybe just me, but I think keeping track of a nine year old is going to be a bigger deal than the dog.

Hey Petemi,
Years ago and far away I broke dogs of gun shy.  I would go out to a pond or lake deeper than the dog could wade in a set of chest waders.  I took along a 20' lead and a starter pistol loaded with 22 short blanks.  After getting deep enough that the dog had to swim, I would let it come to me as the only place it could go with out drowning.  Bang goes the starter pistol and just let the dog swim away until once again it's you or drown.  Praise him for being  a good dog, scratch his ears and fire off another blank.  It took me two or three sessions like this working up to a 12 guage gradually.  Dog always knew being where he could hang onto me was the safest place.  Generally took about a weekend and by then I had the dog out of the water and at most it would crouch or quiver but would stay right at heel.  After that just familiarization to teach the guy and his dog on the next weekend.  Most dogs not only got over gun shy but went on to really enjoy hunting.  Dogs I worked with were Upland game and water retreivers.  This is one of the ways I made my pocket money in high school and college.  Some times you just got to set back and try to understand how a dog thinks.  In reverse order-shelter-water-food-breeding-trust and pack leader.

Since we're telling dog stories....  When I was a kid I had a dog that was half airedale and half standard poodle.  He was the result of 2 kennel doors left open that shouldn't have been and was a very unwanted pup...  My sister brought him home and named him after my older bothers best friend that had teased her.  We had the only dog in town named Steve.

We lived just outside of the city limits at the time and could shoot in the back yard.  We had a bit over an acre and my father planted a huge garden very year with 4 to 6 rows of corn.  We could here the pheasants in the corn then holler out "go get'em Steve, and this dog would run the log way around the garden and flush the birds toward the house.  He was also very protective of the home and we never had to lock the place up while we had him.  I haven't had a dog since I went out on my own but if I could get another dog like that, I would in an instant and I might even name him Steve...

CW- the video I watched without the sound on and it was funny- at about the 32 second mark I swear the dog said "squirrel" as it was distracted.... funny
Pete- Hmmm not sure how you will call that dog without feeling funny, but if the dog has a bird there wont be anyone laughing!  Brent

What is the hen`s name, she looks like she might be a Rhode Island Red!
Back in my high school days one of my grandmothers gave me squirrel dog that she had acquired somehow!!
Anyway this dog was a pretty good squirrel dog and had some hound in him which helped on the scenting and trailing and when he finally treed ,well get your gun ready! Only problem with him was his name was " Squirrel"!! ;D ;D
Talk about going through the woods, and yelling 'Squirrel", was kind of weird trying to call him in every once in awhile!!

Ok, now that we are in the story mode. When we moved out to the lake (i was about7) I really wanted a dog--a speckled "fire dog" (Dalmatian). So--that spring my mom and dad said that they were going to town and get me a dog. Boy was I excited :) . on their return they showed me the dog. This thing fit in the palm of mom's hand. Nope, no Dalmatian :'( . they had stopped by our family Doctors' and picked up a POODLE :o . to make matters worse, it was a "tea cup mini" :o . AND to exacerbate the issue---it was the runt of the litter and the doctors' wife was afraid they could not sell it as it was a runt :o ::) :( . Did I forget to explain that she was a breeder of AKC show dogs. SHEEESH.  :( . figured that I was stuck with a "prissy" show dog that would be all stuck up. well, long story short, this little critter turned out to be one heck of a hunting dog. loved to hunt squirrels and especially RABBITS. Only trouble with the rabbit hunting is that he would chase them in a circle but he was so small that they thought he was playing with them and they would chase him also ;D . Ya had to be danged careful on the circling which one was running in front. hell, he was smaller than some of the rabbits. Came close a couple of times, but never shot him (i was using a .22) :o . Funny thing was a few years later dad told me that he tried to persuade mom to get a "real" hunting type dog but she was in love with this little runt. that she was hoping I wouldn't like it and she could have it. Didn't work out that way. This little dog thought that he was a standard huntin' poodle. love to go after rabbit, squirrel and go fishing. I have missed this dog for the last 34 yrs. he lived to be 17 when he passed. one of the saddest days of my life. God Bless to all and theirs.

I've used a cap pistol around puppies being fed and it worked well.  This older dog may be a challenge.  If I take out a gun, she's gone.

I read about this same technique used by the US Cavalry to train horses to be shot from.   takes about 3 hours tops.
