Got a cat!!!!!
« on: May 16, 2013, 12:18:19 PM »
Have seen a cat running loose in the neighborhood.  I hate cats.  They kill the baby birds that are located in the nest under my shed roof.  I got tired of finding the baby birds killed and not eaten, just lying there dead.  I put traps out under my shed and around the area of the shed.   Two years ago I took them to the animal control shelter.  They would be back in a week running loose again.  I put out a warning at the Road Service Meeting that any cats found on my five acres would not leave the five acres alive.  Well the wife won't let me use connibears, so I am still using the box trap.  Got to go and get this thing to animal control.  It will cost the owners to get it back.  This is the second time I have caught this cat.  Going to give animal control a message for the owners.  Next time I will be using Connibears, that will end the problem.  Maybe the owners will listen this time.

Got work to do, bye.

Sorry guys, I posted this in the wrong forum.  Moderator please move this to "The Old Pot Bellied Stove"  Rog

Just got back from town.  That cat is history.  Seems two other people have delivered it to the Animal Control people before.  This makes the forth time.  Owners will get fined, and the cat will be put down.  Big Orange cat.

Animal Control people told me we have a Black and White cat running loose as well.  My son told me he saw it last week in the back yard.  It's been reported to Animal Control by several people out here.  I set three Connibear 220s in the shed.  We will see what happens.

What is a Connibear 220?
At first I thought you were saying the Colibri 22's  that are quiet and deadly out of a 18 to 20" barrel.

With our mild climate I see kittens roamin with their mothers almost year round. No one will claim them, almost none ever see a vet's office. I trap them in a live trap, then vaccinate them. With a Browning.
Around here it makes folks mad when you complain about their roaming animals.

I'm sorry I forget many of you are not trappers.  A connibear is a trap designed to kill the animal instantly.  They stick their head through and it springs shut.  Either on their neck or body.  It springs shut with enough force to kill.  We use them on Beaver and Muskrats.  The 220 designates size.  They come in sizes 110 to 330.  The 110 is small and used for Muskrats.

The 330 is large and used for Big Beaver.  A 330 can crush the trapper hands or wrist, breaking bones if he gets careless.  Every year I see trappers come into town with their hand or wrist wrapped.  Ask the what they did and they get embarressed and say "Got bite by a Connibear".  I was setting a small one one day, and let it slip.  I had to go back to the truck and drive till I found someone.  It turned out to be a woman who did not have the strength to do anything with it.  She called her teenaged son who was able to compress the springs enough for me to slip my hand out.  Luckily it was a small one and did not break any bones.  You can not open one with one hand.  Check out the video and you will understand what I'm talking about.

There was a cat problem here when I moved in, one that the association would not do anything about, nor the cat owners.   But those who walk their dogs without a lease or don't pick up behind them get fined AND chastised in the monthly newsletter.   A dry lakebed just off my patio was the communal cat toilet that got pretty ripe in the heat of summer.

One night in the wee hours a couple of years ago I jumped in my truck to go someplace.   When I started the engine it was like WWIII under the hood.   I knew that a neighbors cat was climbing up on the engine to stay warm at night sometimes, but it always got out and left when I'd get in the truck if it was there.   This time she didn't get out and was playing tag with the fan blade and belts bouncing off the walls until I got it shut back down.   Had to have used up the rest of her 9 lives that time as she didn't get hurt.

Ever have to clean the mess/stench out of/off of a vehicle that has mutilated a dog/cat?   I have - a full grown German Shepard on the highway years ago that went under my new sports car at 75MPH and came out hamburger.   You never get rid of it completely.

So we don't have much of a cat problem around here anymore...
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

s.d.
you need to carry a good piece of
rope with a loop in it for just such an
occasion. you thread the rope through
the spring eyes, and loop it back through
once more as if sewing it. stick your foot
in the loop and pull with your free hand.
you should be able to get enough leverage to
compress the spring and set the catch hook
on the spring. do it on the other spring and
free yourself. that might save your bacon if you're
by yourself and are in a bind and can't get
anywhere for help. an old feller in the country showed
me that.
i use 160's for the uh. . . ."problem"

Yea, after I had to have help taking that one off, an old trapper showed me that trick with a light cord.  But I have a better one now.  O don't go out setting connibears alone.  My partner finally retired and we go together now.  I lock the springs then hand them to him.  He puts them in the location we want them in.  I drive the stakes to hold them in place.  Then he sets the trigger, releases the spring clips, and we are done there.  He wears big heavy padded welding gloves.  He snapped himself with a small 110 last fall, He has a healthy respect for those 330s.

Seen a 330 kill a German Shepard a few years ago.  Instant kill, them big things have some power.
