Obama to Announce Major US Nuclear Force Cuts Soon Bill Gertz
15 May 2013

President Barack Obama is set to announce a new round of strategic nuclear warhead reductions in the near future as part of a disarmament agenda that could reduce U.S. strategic warheads to as few as 1,000 weapons.

The next round of U.S.-Russian arms talks would follow Obama's expected announcement that the United States' arsenal of strategic warheads can be reduced unilaterally to around 1,000 warheads. That position is expected as part of the Pentagon's long-delayed Nuclear Posture Review implementation study that Obama was expected to sign earlier this year.

Recent press reports have indicated that President Obama may make the cuts -- fully one-third of the nation's arsenal -- by executive action and without Congressional authorization.

Don't you think 1000 or so nukes from just one country aren't enough to screw up this entire planet beyond supporting life for a long time, certainly human life?

It depends.

Sovereign nations have the right of self defense on their own soil. Nuclear warheads are NOT the problem. International traffic in nuclear weapons must be STOPPED, here and now.

Therefore, we need an international treaty that - while recognizing the fundamental right of national self defense - also establishes an outright ban on the transporting of warheads and weapons grade materials and/or components across national borders.

This treaty would require that any nation wishing nuclear armaments would be required to manufacture them locally. Naturally, it would likewise require that any detonation of said device must take place within the national borders of (or sovereign airspace above) the country of manufacture. Or not at all.

Obama can sign a treaty but the senate has to ratify it.
Which party holds a majority in the senate? That answer should help dispell some of this self induced frenzy.

De-commed nukes go to certified places for disassembly. Sandia labs in NM used to do it, and I think there were other places in Texas and maybe Ohio?

Congress has the rope and tape, I would go around them too. Since it is filled with butt hurt politicians that have not been getting their way and invite the grudging mentality of a 4th grader into my political system. Redistribute some taxpayer money away from 1000 more nukes and into something useful like say schools? Yes please.

Just wondering what some people consider is enough money being dumped into what we like to call education? With the amount of money we dump into the education/indoctrination process we should be graduating intelligent kids. I guess its kind of a feel good thing for liberals to say we need more money for our schools. Its like "look what we are doing we are trying to fix education with more money". One of these days I hope they find out that money doesn't have much to do with how our kids are educated. Oh well at least we can keep pouring money into the bottomless pit with continuously poor results, and feel good about it.

Anyway keeping the extra 1000 nukes will be money better spent. Its kind of relative to the thief trying to decide which house to rob. The house that has lots of guns, or the house that has none. Its a concept that liberals could never grasp.

The only reason we have not been nuked is the fact that WE HOLD THE THREAT OF NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION. A bunch of our weapons may not be launched for some reason or another. Should we get to the point that it may be successful to nuke us and destroy some of our stuff(in addition to the stuff that doesn't get launched) we will be toast. Unless We trust that our enemies can be trusted, do we dare reduce our capability anymore? I dont trust barry, or anyone else for that matter, to make that decision by executive order.

All that being said;

I believe that nuclear attacks are not going to come from traditonal enemy sources such as Russia, China...................... $:-\$

I could argue, actually I am, that Iran and N.Korea see it the same way. As long as they don't have nukes they are subject to someone "crappping" all over them. Nukes are an deterrent to keep your own house from getting bombed by those that have Nukes, the others are SOL.

Case in similar non-nuke point. Do you think the IDF would fly and bomb Syria if that country had a good Air Defense?

I think there is a difference. There are some countries that are not looking to nuke anyone. The nukes they have are for a deterrent, like our nukes for instance. Then there are countries like Iran and N. Korea that have leadership that are, shall we say, like a loose cannon, that are just itching to wipe someone off the map. In fact both dictators from those two countries that you mentioned, that just want nukes for a deterrent, have made public statements about wanting to nuke another country. I really can't see the argument that Iran and N. Korea are just like anyone else, and just want nukes for a deterrent.

Honestly, Israel would go bomb syria if that country had a real good Air Defense. If they thought missles there were being aimed at them, or being shipped to their enemies to use against them. Only Reagan and H.W. Bush( 1) kept them from making iraq a parking lot.

I don't like or dislike them because they are Jews in the religious or ethnic sense. I reserve my critique for their political and economical meddling.

As far as the military is concerned, the outcome of some battles/wars would probably be different without massive US help in equipment and Intelligence.

I guess i missed your point. Does the fact that they had help from an ally discount their victories. This country, and Canada, had help from allies beating back their enemies. It certainly doesn't make them cowards that they took advantage of support from allies.

I dont know of any inteligence reports from this government that assisted them in their defense of their country. Do you?

I seem to remember when I was in the Air Force, 1965-1973, the Israel's got F86's for us. Were outdated and relatively slow so they pumped them up a bit. Added F106 motors to them. made them pretty darn fast! Maybe it was F102 motors. I talked to a piolet that had actually seen them go and he said they could out run anything!
