Don't you think 1000 or so nukes from just one country aren't enough to screw up this entire planet beyond supporting life for a long time, certainly human life?
It depends.
Sovereign nations have the right of self defense on their own soil. Nuclear warheads are NOT the problem. International traffic in nuclear weapons must be STOPPED, here and now.
Therefore, we need an international treaty that - while recognizing the fundamental right of national self defense - also establishes an outright ban on the transporting of warheads and weapons grade materials and/or components across national borders.
This treaty would require that any nation wishing nuclear armaments would be required to manufacture them locally. Naturally, it would likewise require that any detonation of said device must take place within the national borders of (or sovereign airspace above) the country of manufacture. Or not at all.
