sb2 357mag factory combo?
« on: May 19, 2013, 10:55:27 AM »
Is the 357 on a SB2 frame still available?  All I can find are the 357mag and 44mag on the SB1.

If I want this combo will I have to buy an accessory barrel?

Thanks all.

SB1 only since 2008, those made prior to 2008 were all on SB2 frames, if you want an SB2 combo, make one yourself with used parts or send a frame in for acc barrels.

Acquire an SB2 frame / rifle and send it in for a 357 mag barrel. Look in the FAQ's for what years H&R will rebarrel.

My first 357 Maxi sits on a shotgun frame I sent in for an accessory barrel.  I recently bought a SB1 frame that was a factory 357 Mag rifle.  The 357 Maxi barrel I bought as part of a multi barrel rifle set (all factory fitted) fits perfectly on the SB1 frame and that's it's new home.  There is some disagreement about a 445 Super Mag on the SB1 frame (I won't do it) but for the 357 Maxi there's no need for it to be on a SB2 unless you want to switch barrels with rifle calibers.

With that said, the large firing pin on a shotgun frame is luck of the draw working with a the 357 or 44.

Thanks guys.  I'm interested in the .356W rechamber.

So, going by the 2008 guideline, this rifle has been sitting around for five years?

Not necessarily. The barrel could be stamped with SB2 but that has no meaning. I would request a pic of the receiver without the stock attached to make the determination. I'm not sure if that stock set was available in 2008.

Thanks, Dinny

Actually, no.  The barrel will be stamped SB2 but the receiver is a SB1.  It's hard to tell from the pictures but the frame appears to be matte colored.  That's a SB1.  A SB2 frame is blued.  Only way to know for sure is to take the stock off.  The H&R website has pictures on the accessory barrel page that shows the difference with the stock off.

Really looks like an SB1 receiver.

The one on gun broker is too high.  Do yourself a favor and buy a SB2 frame here on the classifieds, buy a .357 barrel either here or from H&R, rent the reamer from 4D and make yourself a .356/.358.  It's an A+++++ Magic Rifle.  I don't think there's anyone here that isn't happy with theirs.  The easier, lower cost option is to ream it to .357 Maximum.  You can't go wrong there either.  They're so terrible we only own two Handi Maxis. ::)

Thanks again guys.  You all are just confirming what I knew but didn't want to be true.  I hoping to get lucky and get everything all at once.  Oh well, guess I'll be "stuck" with two barrels. ;)

What they said, that's an SB1, betcha!! Here's a pic of the right side of an SB1 "rifle" frame that comes with the SB2 marked 357 and 44 mag barrels.
