Good .45-70 scopes
« on: May 19, 2013, 04:11:05 PM »
What scopes are you all using on your .45-70s?  My straight tube 30mm Eagle Eye optics scope will not focus no matter how much I twist the focus ring; the crosshairs are sharp but the target is not.  I've reviewed the Handis pic thread in the FAQ but a lot of the pics were either moved or deleted.

Any info is appreciated.  Pics too.  Thanks.

I've got one of the old leupold 4x compacts on mine.  plenty of magnification and best of all about 4" of eye relief.

Love my weaver 4x32 shotgun scope.  Has about 5" eye relief.  Think they maybe hard to find right now.  The Mueller hybrid looks like it would be a good one at a reasonable price.

Unless your eyesight is really bad, try a peep sight.  I put one on my .45-70 and I wouldn't replace it with a scope unless my vision gets really bad if get's that bad, I won't be able to drive to the range so there won't be much shooting anyway...

Check out Swift scopes. As good a Leupold and alot cheaper. If you do - get the Premier model.  I'v had one on my 45/70 for years with no problems. I have the 1.5 to 4.5 scope.  http://www.eabco.com/Swift01.htm

2 x 7 Leupold ;D   You can find good deals on them sometimes and plenty of eye relief.  The only time you have to pay close attention is if you are shooting HOT loads!

Good luck,

My Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40 that's now on my 45 LC Encore used to sit on my 500 S&W Mag Encore. It'll handle anything the 45-70 can dish out. JMHO, but it's a very good quality scope without paying big bucks.

I've been using a 1-4x leupold shotgun scope, with heavy duplex crosshairs for years.  I even transferred the scope from my 45-70 guide gun, and used it on my ruger no. 1, for my trip to Zim., back in 2011.  The scope has always done a stellar job.

I bought my .45-70 used.  It came with a Simmons 3-9x50.  I thought it was going to be junk and that it would shoot apart, but it didn't, and I'm shooting very hot loads.  I don't know what they sell for, but it can't be much.  It is bright, clear, and has held up well.  The eye relief is generous and no problem with scope eye :D .  It doesn't wander and I've made some very impressive long shots with it.

The old El Paso Weaver 2.5 and 3X non-belled ocular have been my standard for so long that they just seem normal. If I lost 'em I would get one of those new fangled ones with small bells and not too much magnification that sits just forward of the hammer and be very happy.

I like Leupold's fixed power scopes.  They are rugged with long eye relief.  Also, Weaver fixed power are good.  I am fond of the 6 power, but the 4 power works well, too.

Like I stated in yor other thread- Simmons pro diamond 4x. For 40$ you won't find a tougher scope. Probably wont for twice that much $$

Barska AO Air Rifle.
Excelent optics.
Paralax correction from infinity down to 5 meters.
Designed to take the brutal and wicked kick of magnum spring  air rifles, therefore, perfect for the kick of the 45-70.
Ticks on the cross hairs somewhat matching ballistics of 45-70, 22lr, high speed .22 pellets, etc.
About $40.00 in Amazon.
