California Approves $92M Ammo Tax to Combat Gun Violence    Dabney Bailey
Fri, May 17, 2013

The California Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee recently approved a new measure that places a 10 percent tax on all ammunition sold in California. Law enforcement agencies will be exempt from the tax.
The Board of Equalization estimates that the new tax will generate $92.4 million in annual revenues.

Democratic Assemblymen Rob Bonta and Roger Dickinson, who both support the bill, hope to use the new revenue to help cities that are plagued with gun violence. Bonta explained, “Cities throughout the state, including Oakland, are suffering horrific and increasing gun violence. AB 187 will provide the City of Oakland, and cities in similar circumstances, with sufficient street-level public safety presence to prevent gun violence and attend to it when it does occur.”

California legislators are also trying to push through bills that would allow Oakland city officials to draft stronger gun laws to combat violence in their crime-wracked city.

But AB 187 doesn't focus entirely on guns. The bill will also fund mental healthcare services for California children. “Screening young children for signs of mental illness and addressing any issues early on is the key to a healthier and more productive adult life,” Assemblyman Dickinson said. “A limited tax on ammunition is a small price to pay for better mental healthcare for kids, reduced crime, and safer communities statewide.”

This is in addition to Dickinson’s AB 760, which would impose a five cent tax on every round of ammunition sold in California. Ironically, the tax would be more expensive than the actual bullets. If Dickinson’s bill passes, the cost of bullets in California will go through the roof.

These laws are reminiscent of Chris Rock’s comedy sketch, where Rock argued that every bullet should cost $5,000 in order to avoid unnecessary gun violence. A single round will be a long way off from $5,000 under these two laws, but gun owners will still feel the pinch after the price of bullets more than doubles.

In the past several months, gun rights advocates everywhere have been buying up ammunition because of new gun control laws. With California legislators trying to tax ammunition into the ground, gun stores will likely experience a flurry of activity as gun owners try to get their hands on ammunition before prices skyrocket.

what California needs is a law to combat irrational legislators...

it's a scam by the legislature to "Bail out the state" from it's failing economy/budget.

Two things: 1) If the ammo tax becomes law, anyone selling ammo just over the border in Arizona, Nevada and Oregon should do well.

2)  Why not levy a tax on lawbreakers and leave the innocent folks out of it?

Would be a good idea if most lawbreakers had any significant money, at least that one could confirm.

Running to New Joisy won't fix the problem either.  Stop complaining about California.  It's an American problem, not just California.

Divide and conquer.  That is the strategy of Powderman.  California this, California that.  He sounds more like the Fox News channel.  Oh, how we need those Republicans in there.  They will solve all our problems indeed.   :o
Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.

Looks like I will be driving to Las Vegas to buy ammo.  Drive right past the Bass Pro shop in Onario and hit the one in vegas to buy bulk ammo.  Hey California Law makers, I would like ot show you that you are number 1 with my finger.  Oh that's the wrong finger.  Still works.

Do that while you still can.  Once California tightens up on ammo, Nevada will fall into lockstep when dealing with California residents.  As it is, CA resident cannot legally purchase firearms from a NV dealer, even for use exclusively in NV.

Most states have that.  In Va when I lived there the law was you could buy a long gun (rifle and or shotgun) if it was legal to buy that gun in that state.

As long as the ammo is legal in CA they should not have a problem selling it to me.  They have questioned other CA residents in line that were buying High Cap mags and showign CA I D to match their credit cards.

Thanks I didn't know if it was true or not. I have a friend who lives in Capitan and is currently
moving from California to here and she hasn't said anything about it.
I haven't seen her in awhile but that whole area up in Lincoln county is filling up with California
expats. Mostly because of the taxes in Calif. but a lot of them say the gun laws out there were also
a factor. Lincoln is right next door to Ruidoso which has a heavy population of Texans so the
Californians are locking horns with the Texans about everything.

Which I don't understand the people I've meet coming here from California are highly conservative
and nothing like the ones who messed up Colorado. Lets just say a lot of them took advantage of
selling out in Calif. at very high prices and buying homes here for 20% of what they would cost
out there. And with all that money in their pockets and now a NM resident they sure took advantage
of buying up about every gun they always wanted. And I'm talking the high dollar stuff like the FNH
guns even at these rediculous prices. A lot of them I've met just stopped off in Arizona during their
last move and really stocked up in the Phoenix metro area.

The California lawmakers have to see that this is harming their tax base these are professional
people and businesses they are loseing out there not the bums. NM and Az are just sitting back and
laughing saying bring it on guys. Texas is getting everything from the east while we are getting it
from the west and now Colorado is starting to lose people also. We now have a Republican Governer
and at our mid terms our legislature is looking like its going to shift to the right also.
Which is fine with me but the papers attribute that to the influx of Californians along with the Texans
who are already here.

I warned you months ago that we would start to see new "sin" taxes on ammo before long.  This cancer will spread across the country.  I would not be surprised if we do not soon hear rumors about a Bill proposing a Federal "sin" tax on ammo.  Mark my words.

Oh, by the way Cali is pushing a ban on all lead hunting ammo within the state not just in areas where Condors live.

Anna,
Unfortunatly they raised taxes here and now have a surplus and are excited at how they can spend it not understanding that the tax revinue is short lived and when they over spend it and the surplus leaves they will be short again.

Boggles the mind that they place a tax on ammo that will raise 92 million dollars to fight gun violence when we all know, all that's needed is a law that say's, gun violence is illegal! Oh wait, we have that.

Let me see if I get this right,
Higher taxes on Ammo will cut down the amount of ammo on the streets and will curb gun viloence.
But Higher taxes in general will help the economy wiht people spending more, acording to the president?
UHHHH How does that work?  Taxes either reduce consumption or they increase consumption?  Which one are they lying about?

LOL   The error in their plan IS there has to be enough ammo to sell to be able to collect taxes on it. They will probably be lucky if they take in $1000 this year...............Hope they haven't spent that $92 million yet..............LOL
