Met A New Long Range Shooter
« on: May 20, 2013, 09:32:10 AM »
I met a young guy this weekend at Sportsman's Warehouse.  He has just got out of the Marines, and settled here in Fairbanks.  He has been looking for a long range shooter to shoot and hunt with.  Plus a place to shoot.  Invited him to meet me out at the river.  I showed him where I shoot, and the back stop is located where any misses and bullets go into the Army impact area.  A totally "Off Limits Area" due to unexploded ordinance.  It will be off limits for ever.  He shoots a .300 Ultra Mag, with a custom military scope on it.  He was impressed with my .338/378 Weatherby, and the cartridge I shoot.  After we shot a while, I moved my gong from 1000 yards, out to 1500 yards.  I was hitting my gong at 1500 yards, and having a good day.  The Gong is 24" X 24".  Now I will admit I was not hitting the center every shot, but I was hitting the gong every time I pulled the trigger.  (OK, I was showing off).  He hit four out of five.

Then I pulled out my 25-06, and he pulled out a 30-06.  Shooting milk jugs.  Starting at 400 yards, we both did good all the way out to 700 yards.  We both feel that is the practical limit for those two cartridges.

I think he can be an asset at Caribou camp this year.  We are more interested in shooting Wolves than Caribou.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I hate to hear about these new "long range" hunters. 1500 yds for a practical shot is unreasonable.  I try and limit my shots to 500 meters these days.  Hunting and stalking are becoming lost skills.  Some of these guys are too caught up in the romance of a long Quigley shot.

I'm thinking of my own experiences unfortunately ......sorry Rodger.  I was getting tires when the manager saw I had some 6mm ammo in my truck.....he went on about how he and his brother were only doing long range hunting now.  I'm more proud of the last four deer I killed at 50-75 yds.  I know I can shoot.  Stalking is the bigger challenge.

I am proud of the Deer I have shot with my bow & those I have shot at distance. One does not exclude the other & what really matters is that we shoot within our limits no matter what the weapon is.

Sourdough:  Congrats at finding a new shootin' buddy as well as a asset to your huntin' camp.  I can understand why you would prefer shooting wolves over caribou but the later tastes better, period.......................
