375 Winchester in a 21" tapered carbine barrel...recoil?
« on: May 20, 2013, 02:08:02 PM »
What do you shoot out of your .375 Win carbine barrel? What's enjoyable to shoot, and what is not? Any advice for a potential buyer of one?
Considering buying one I found. Easy open frame although I already have a G2 frame and rifle stock setup as well.
Thanks.

I liked mine allot!

Shot good too, got a couple deer with it. My load was a full case of RL7 and a 220g JSP. Recoil was stout as its a light package.

I would buy it again if I needed it.

I shoot mine out of a 14" Super TC Contender barre.  It shoots real fine.  We used to haVe bench rest matches @ 200 yards, I could keep then in the 9`10 RING ALL DAY LONG

The 375 Win is one of my favorites, it must be because I have 4 of the barrels 1-14" 3-21" tappered with sights 2 blue 1 SS. Two of the 21s are still new in the box. All I shoot in the 21" is my own cast 250gr bullets, recoil is mild and accuracy good. Heavy loads in the 375 will stretch a frame pretty fast and I have always wondered if you shot enough factory rounds would it stretch a frame. Recoil from a factory round is brisk.

It's not a comforting thought to read the words "stretch frame" when I think about spending $$$ for an older (new condition) Contender. I hope the 375 Win is an 'ok' round for it.
I also have a G2 frame I could put the 375 barrel on but would like to know if and what loads could stretch this easy open Contender.
I called back had the gun shop set the Contender away (comes w/ two tapered 21" blued barrels-a 223 also) until I could get there. Gun and barrels appeared unfired and the walnut stock looks above average.

Brass: are cases available? Is anyone using 30/30 brass? If the Contender needs toned down loads then the 30/30 case should work for reduced loads.
Guess I should heed my own beliefs and get .375 Win cases for it. I just did give 20 cases to a friend who has a Marlin levergun in this round.

If it will stretch the easy open it will stretch the G2.

Who made the barrel?  If it is factory (TC)then sane loads will not hurt the frame.  A few of the custom shops made barrels in chamberings that could hurt frames if loaded to factory levels, so be careful.

It's a 'newsed' barrel. Appears to have never been shot, and is a factory T/C.
One of my favorite rifle rounds is the .250 Savage in Ackley Improved version. I like it in the Ruger 77 bolt rifle I have it in. I also see a few were made for Contenders. I would not want a Contender, even a G2 in .250 Savage standard or Ackley. Seems as though it would be too easy to load hotter than the Contender was ever made for.

The .375 Win has a 30/30 head diameter I believe. Lots of Contenders out there in 30/30. I think rounds like the 300 Savage and 250 Savage are not a good round to have in a Contender BECAUSE I think even factory loads might be too high pressure/back thrust with a case diameter that large.
With the helpful input of some that know a good bit about Contenders I think it is as much at home with the .375 Win as any 30/30 round, and the Herrett rounds come to mind also. I'm also thinking about seeing if a good bullet is available for paper patching...something I enjoy with straight walled cases.
Thanks for the input....I'll post a picture of this 2 barrel package as soon as I can get back to the store that put it back for me.
Now to find 20 cases!

Actually the two savage rounds CAN be dandy Contender rounds as there factory ballistics ARE with in the T/C's limitations. Thing is both of these rounds are so frequieltly pushed to higher pressures they can quickly become a problem for the Contender frame. The 375 is loaded to some pretty hot pressures but with its .506 case head compaired to sub .473 for the Savages. Its a bit safer. It still can be a frame stretcher if pushed and lots of rounds are fired.

Simply the closed breech design of this gun store aching is a regular happenstance. This is the receiver is built to withstand a Serrano. Amount of it. This is kept in check by limiting pressures.

IMHO The 375 Win is one of the best woods range calibers. It has good diameter respectable bullet weight and at 50K+ darn respectable energy and velocity figures too. It surpasses the great 30-30, 35 rem as well as the old time 38/55 and newer 44 mags in these duties.

I have e two Marlins and altho my Contender barrels are long gone these Amrlins ain't going anywhere any time soon. :)

Actually 0.420" case [body] diameter vs the 0.473" of the Savages. I don't count the rim of the case as it is solid.
As some have said, got to be safe in any round and how it's loaded.

Well, went and put the $$ on it...got a Montana trip soon so I may take some of the 60 days they allow for layaway. The T/C stock nicer than the standard wood they came with.
