Anyone use T/C's TCR's?
« on: February 22, 2004, 09:12:09 AM »
Does anyone else own and use T/C's TCR models? I have a TCR'83 in .30/06. Nice and light ,shoots great (.832" my best for a 5 shot group).Don't ever see any for sale in gunshops or at gun shows.Last time I saw barrels was about 4 years ago. Always attracts attention at the range with most saying they never heard of or seen one before.Traded a S&W 1006 10mm plus $75.00 for it about 10 years ago.

czarninakid,

My brother got a TCR in 6mmTCU that was terrible! Lower than expected (way under advertised) velocities, primers (even with light loads) disintigrating and getting into the firing pin chamber which prevented the gun from firing etc... It was sent back twice and we finally cured the problem by rechambering to 6mm/30 (30-30 necked down to 6mm - no shoulder angle change and no blowing out the case. He gets groups of less than .5 MOA at 100 yards and the 85 grain bullets leave the bore at just over 3000 FPS (chronographed). He really likes his rifle with the new round.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

I just made a deal to buy one. I have been wanting one and this is one of the few I have seen recently. It comes with a .22 Hornet and a .223 barrel. Besides .30-06, .22 Hornet, and .223 what chamberings were available? I am primarily a deer hunter, so I may trade one of the varmit barrels for a deer caliber.  Ed's TCs lists a 12 guage smooth bore slug barrel for $150, FWIW.

The TCR was available with rifle barrels from .22LR to .45/70 including some belted magnums in the latest models.Earlier guns needed a factory modifcation to handle the magnum rounds.Production of the TCR ceased when that part of the factory burned down.No parts at all are available from the factory nor can the earlier guns be modified to accept the magnums.I got this information first hand from a factory rep in a phone conversation a few years ago. He then gave me a verbal sneak preview of the soon to be released Encore.Had a chance at a custom barrel once chambered for the wildcat 6.5 American which is AKA 6.5/.308 now known as the .260 Remington.Passed it up because the seller would not separate it from the Zeiss scope that it wore. The scope put the price out of my reach that day.Good luck with yours and be sure there is a shotgun barrel fore end to go with that 12ga.

I had a TCR 83 years ago in 243 Win. I regretted selling it and bought a TCR 87 in 32-40 which I am keeping. I had a custom shop barrel in 30-30 made before the fire at TC and got a good deal on a 223 barrel a while back. What I would really like is a 22 Hornet barrel, but TCR barrels go for way more than I will spend on ebay, etc.
By the way, the TCR was never made in a rimfire version. However, since it has a removable recoil plate in the receiver face, it would be possible to make an offset firing pin for it and have a custom barrel made. It would not be cheap and would not offer much over the Contender carbine in a rimfire IMO.

I have one that I picked up at a gun show about 10 years ago. One of my favorite rifles. Have a .30-06 barrel and a .223 If any of you are looking to trade , I would love to swap off the .223 barrel for something else, (other than magnum).  I advertised this a while back in the Contender/Encore trade forum. But got no replies. I have corresponded with Mike at OTT about a conversion on my barrel, and he is interested in doing some work for the TCR. Hopefully, someone will soon bring back some kind of production of barrels for these rifles. VVCG did at one time list them, but the price was quite high.
