Yukon River is on a rampage
« on: May 21, 2013, 08:15:26 AM »
The Yukon ice hit Eagle over the weekend and damaged many homes.  Pushing I believe 8 off their foundations by Ice.  It hit Circle yesterday, 30 homes pushed off their foundations, and left uninhabitable.  The ice is now headed for Fort Yukon and Stevens Village.

The ice on the Tanana has broken up and headed down stream.  Not expecting further flooding down stream before it dumps into the Yukon.

You guys got Tornados and we got River Ice and flooding.

Hey Sourdough and other Alaskaphiles:

Go to youtube and search for "bizarre foods alaska". You should see a 45 minute show by Andrew Zimmern on arctic foods and food culture. It's really fascinating even if you're not a foodie. Shows stuff I never knew about, like a bit about champion sled dogs and how they are cared for. Making spruce tip tree as a winter hot drink. And all kinds of other cool stuff.

That show series on  bizarre foods is often about some guy traveling the world in search of more bugs and innards to eat, but some of them are really good. This is one of the good ones.

There's another one about Iceland in 3 parts that is also fascinating for people who like the north or Scandinavia. Some of that one is pretty gross though.

The Hydrologist went on air on the local radio station yesterday morning and said everything was all clear.  No more danger of flooding from the Yukon at Fort Yukon.  then she was back on the radio last evening.  She was saying the rivers in the mountains above town are jammed by ice.  The overflow is running over and cutting new channels.  In some cases the new channels are coming to the Yukon miles from their normal locations.  These new channels are threatening the town.  They are now monotering these new channels to prevent loss of life in case one comes into town.  Maybe with enough warning they can divert the water around town and to the Yukon River.

The area of the river down stream is not likely to have any problems.

Yesterday the Temp was 76 and the mosquitos were vicious.  Walk outside and you were covered within two to three minutes.  Today it got up to 86, that's a real scorcher for us.  No mosquitos too hot for them.  We don't have Air Conditioning in our homes up here.  So the wife and I went into town to enjoy the A/C in the truck.  When we got home the bedrooms must be 110 degrees.    We opened windows and turned on fans.  Then went and sat in the swing under the Birches.  Then the Thunder Boomers started.  It got dark to the South East, and thunder was shaking the house.  For about an hour we watched the clouds go by South of us.  We need the rain, the grass in the yard is so brittle it sound like walking on glass when we cross the yard.  Already have a fire going on the Army Land south of us.  Hoping it stays down there.  All that water flooding the rivers and here we are dry as a tinder box.  Grab a Spruce bough and all the needles break off in your hand.  I bet the lighting South of us started fires today.  Won't know till tomorrow.  If a fire jumps the river already discussed it with the wife.  We grab the box of pictures and disk, jump in the truck and hit the road.  Everything here is insured and can be replaced.
