Making a fake muzzle brake?
« on: May 22, 2013, 11:36:10 AM »
My DPMS is really loud with the brake. I am going to make a fake one that looks just like the one that's on the gun. Anyone know if 6061 or 7075 alum. will work or should I go for steel. Thanks, Don

do you need it to make legal length?  if not why not just cap the threads?

I can make length but like the cool factor ;D  of the one that is on it. Just worried the gas might melt the alum. Don

I am not a metallurgist, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I would think if you used a "fake" muzzle brake with no openings, it would act as an extension of the barrel, containing pressure.  Don't know of how well aluminum would work in those conditions... I do know I have seen fake muzzle brakes and flashiders made of steel for use in locals that ban functional ones.

Larry, I will make the hole about 30 caliber so I would think pressure wouldn't be an issue. I think I will go with steel. Thanks, Don
