H&R rifle vid
« on: May 22, 2013, 03:41:33 PM »
Hey Guys.  It's been awhile but I had an idea for a reloading video and found that my H&R in .223 fit the bill perfectly.  My idea was to shoot a round of .223, reload that case, and shoot it again all in one continuous take.  I wanted to do that at the range using a Lee hand press to show how you can make good ammo without a lot of expensive equipment and a lot of space.  At first I was going to use the AR15 but then remembered that I wanted the case to stay in the frame during the video so I brought out my H&R rifle and boy did it do well.  Once I got home my calipers measured a 50 yard group of .15 inch using my Walmart bought Heavy barrel ultra varmint.  I really had no idea it could do that and will take it out of the safe way more often now.

Good video! I forgot to lube a piece of brass once, my results were different than yours. :-\

Thanks, Dinny

Agreed Dinny.  The unlubed case could have been a real oops.  I just got a little sparse on lube once and had to end up releasing the nut on top of my lee die and hammer out the depriming rod to get the case out.  lol  Nice video though for someone who might be a little hesitant to start reloading their own.  The one thing I'd add is make sure you are using good data, not just something taken offline.  My buddy got a load from Reloader's Nest that several people said was good and when he fired it in his Savage it basically ruined the bolt face, and stuck the thing hard.  Once he could actually get the bolt open, he had a bulged barrel and ended up having to rebarrel it and have the bolt magna fluxed and fixed for cracks.  Only takes one bad load...  I personally don't push very many loads near their fastest.  I actually find that the efficiency numbers in quick load are a pretty good indicator of a consistent load.  When the efficiency is over 30% you will almost always have a sub moa load.  ;)

What brand scale are you using in the video?

.......nice vid, I carry the same gear and the new deluxe quick case trimmer w/the .223 trim die body and trim/chamfer right on the hand press. Your right, it adds up, I added a case expanding die for my GC cast bullets. Oh, and a universal decapping die, cause the FL sizing die hates 5.56 brass.

zombiekiller, thanks for the video, this could help alot of folks decide on learning to reload themselves. If a picture is worth 1,000 words then a good video is Priceless, thanks again, John.

Zombikiller --

You had a very clever idea, to show the reloading in one continuous take.   I have to join Tacklebury and Dinny in regard to the lube (or lack of).    Just a few days ago, I got out my brand, spanking new RCBS .223 die, and accidentally picked up an unlubed case and proceeded to stick it.   Remembering that my grandson had borrowed my stuck case remover tool, I attempted to get it out using "unorthodox" techniques.    I'm now waiting on the Brown Truck of Dreams to deliver my expander rod unit.

Very pretty countryside in the video, by the way, and doggone fine shooting as well!   Thanks for the video.

Come on fellas, somebody has to tell Zombiekiller that a Handirifle will not shoot accurately with a bipod attached to the foreend. ::) ;D

Cool vid. You can sometimes get away with one or two no lube cases if they have not been cleaned. The powder residue serves as lube . I wouldn't make a habit of it. But that is a good intro to reloading 101.

I disagree with your assessment of Lee Loader Classic accuracy. Use of a hammer rather than hydraulic pressure to achieve the reloading process is not cause of inherently poor ammunition. It does however take more time (significantly more) to do a good job. I plan to shoot single case, breech seated plain base lead 45 Colt from my Classic barreled Mannlicher this summer and have been practising with the Lee Loader Classic kit. Not sure if it would be much different with bottleneck cases but with straight walls, it's straightforward.
