Because you can load it down to .22 lr level with unique or up to black bear level with 65 gr. Gamekings and a decent load of rifle powder.  I'm finding it quite versatile, especially in the 1:9 twist.  The 1:12 is a little less so.  Oh, mine also fills in a hole the size of a dime at 100 yards .  ;)

What are you going to shoot Wood Chucks with?
What are you going to take Coyotes with?
What else are you going to use to.......  inbetween the 22Hornet and the 22-250?

I was going to write a big long dissertation explaining in detail why I bought some Handis...It boils down to this, I wanted one and had the money! My Handi 223 with the 16 1/2" barrel is a keeper!

I don't have one, and once would have said because of the cheap ammo and availability of brass. Now I would say that about a 30/30  ??? , or a 7 X61 Sharpe & Hart  :o - something at Walmart you know??

Well I don't need one I need 4.  One because I don't have one and it does fit nice between the hornet and 22-250, and I don't always want to break out one of my black guns (draws too much attention)  One for an upcoming project.  And two superlight compacts to start my boys on.  Granted they are only 3 mths old  and my wife says I need to wait on that one for a while. ;)

I have one.  Would I part with it?  No.  It's a 1 in 9 Superlight.  Do I shoot cheap ammo in it....no, just my handloads.  Does it do anything my other rifles can't?  No.  Mild .22-250 loads will do the same thing.  Why do I have it, like it and keep it??  Cause I'm a handiholic, that's why.  It's a good thing my imagination is limited by advancing age.  I don't know where I'd store or have time to shoot all the Handis a fertile mind could create.

The answer to your question lies in YOUR definition of "NEED".  That is a very nebulous term when referring to guns.  A "Normal" human would not "Need" 14 Handi Rifles among many others.  All I can tell ya, is that here on this forum, our "Needs" might be a tad different from the rest of society. ::)   Having a fair idea of the advanced state of your affliction, I'd say you need it.  If you require a prescription, let me know and Doctor Pete will get it for you. ;)

I keep asking myself the same question.


I keep one in a saddle boot behind the seat of my pick up truck, and wonder why I don't keep a 30-30 or an AR type. It works, but it's not that great.......maybe I should try some different ammo?

A few guys here have them around 16 inches, which is the length of the Military weapon.  However the Gov't 's barrels are one in seven if I recall correctly and normally shoot heavier bullets than the Handi's one in nine.....or 12 as the case may be.  My 20 inch Superlight works great where it is.  I'd be hesitant to shorten it.  If I had a second one to play with, I'd do it in a heartbeat.  The idea of a 16 inch superlight fascinates me.  I guess I'm just a shorty junky. That's probably backlash from lugging long barreled smokepoles around the woods for years.  Ask Tim, he knows all about it.

up here, the shortest we can make them is 18" unless we start with a new barrel and stub it

then we can make 'em as short as we want, as long as the OAL doesn't go less than XXX mm

I have a SL in 223, and wonder if the extra 2" would make that much difference in handling....

only one way to find out, I guess. 
(I can always weld the piece back on!)

For me, a 22" Handi is already shorter than most long-guns and balance muzzle heavy as I like.

I think 20" is perfect. The M16A2 has a 20" barrel and I can shoot it very well out to 300yds.  I know the USMC has been hesitant to issue the M4 carbine for fear of losing long range accuracy, they shoot to 500yds.

Hooah, love the 20".  I only like 16" for carrying in tight environs.  I carried the 20" and shot human size targets with the stock irons out to 750 yards when I was in Infantry school.  The difference in sight radius is unmistakable.  ;)

You have to cut it yourself or send to a gunsmith. H&R never made one that short.

Actually the M4's barrel length is 14.5", 16" with the flash hider. ;)

I enjoy target shooting 223 -- cast bullets at low power loads (about 22H speeds) - it is the cheepest center fire shooting I can do...EZ to find brass or low priced surplus brass...
No change that they will stop making 223 ammo.in my lifetime -- or my kids life!
It is not a brush gun or the best deer gun....But I shoot it the most.
It splats prairie dogs, and puts hole in paper..
 
Oh   a 22 inch for me  it is quieter with lowpower loads and OK with full loads.   Dan
