What are Florida Hog Hunters using for firearms
« on: May 23, 2013, 08:51:04 AM »
Was out Hog Hunting yesterday. Using a scoped Thompson Contender. 7/30. Did not get a shot while on Stand. (Early Morning) Contender was fine while not moving. Later started walking up the hogs where they were bedded down (Hiding)  Had 2 snap shots but found it slow, heavy and hard to find the Hog in the scope in  the palmetto's while they are running. Saw lots of hogs between 25 and 100 ft while they are running full tilt. Passed up many shots because I new I would not be accurate. OK what guns are you other hog hunters using in very brushy terrain, Thomtender

I am not a stalk and shoot hunter.  I wait for them to come to me.  When they come, I hail them with 22 Long Rifle, 223 Remington, 243 Winchester, Marlin 336 in 30-30 Winchester, Winchester 270 Model 70, and 338 Winchester Magnum BAR.

However, if I was a stalk and hunt shooter in heavy brush, I think the Marlin 336 in 30-30 Winchester would be just fine topped off by a 170 grain jacketed round nose bullet for just about anything that moves and sporting a single power 4x (or less) scope.

Remember, if the pigs are REAL close when they bolt, look down the barrel and not through the scope.  A hit in the vitals on a pig is nearly always fatal.  The 30-30 will pass through and leave a significant blood trail to follow..but not after dark.

i've used .444 - 44 mag peestola and marlin
lever with williams peep- sks- ak- .54 ml -
30/30 marlin- 12 single,pump, and auto-
and a .45 acp govt 1 time

the river bottoms here are similar- briars,
thick brush, yaupon, some palmetto, ferns, etc.

most times i do as l.o. - wait on the destructive
beggars to come my way then put one in the noggin.
if you shoot a sow with little ones, we always wait
and most times the babes come back to where the
sow is laying. the little ones are a delicacy.

if you're gonna walk 'em up you may want
a nice M1 or M2 benneli with appropriate fodder

I forgot...the AR-15 isn't bad either.  Sometimes a lot of backup to the first bullet that is readily fed to the chamber can be a good thing.

:)  Howdy! Like Land_Owner said, the Marlin 336 in 30-30 is a good choice. You don't need a scope for close up brush hog hunting. Always, Gene

williams peep
About as good as it gets for fast, accurate, and close...

Of course, if you wear bi- or tri-focal glasses, like me, a scope is about the smallest aperture that you will want to squint through.

sir, i'm not too far behind you as
far as squinty. if it's dark or getting
dark the aperture gets unscrewed
and pocketed and i use the sight
as a ghost ring. that still works ok
with the orange front sight i've
got on it.

I been using my 257 Roberts with a M8, 3x leupold on it or a open sighted marlin 30-30.  ;)

Luck, we got way too many hogs.

Hunt at night and use 22 LR and a one eyed dog.

Should we ask how the dog ended up with only one eye if you hunt at night with a 22LR?  [Rhetorical question and just kidding - I know you didn't shoot the dog].

Ruger 44 mag carbine, Ruger SRH 44 mag,  .303 Brit SMLE carbine, Rossi 357 mag M92 levergun in SS, - these for walking around.

If I am up in my treehouse overlooking a feeding area I prefer my Ruger American in 30-06....180gr Fusions or my Remmy 760 with the same bullet.

Walking up? Marlin 336 30-30, 12ga, slug or buck,  357/44/45 revolver. Whatever is quick and handy for you. From a blind? Pretty much anything you can make a killing shot with.
