G2 muzzleloader
« on: May 23, 2013, 03:46:27 PM »
I've had a factory G2 muzzleloader barrel hidden away in the safe for the past two years.  This evening my son unwrapped it for his 12th birthday.  This barrel will compliment the. 22 l.r. and 6.8 barrels that he already has.  Wondering what we can expect from this barrel.

Smoke,..noise.
Ok, I'm anxious to hear about those, too. I enjoy muzzle loaders and the 45 and 50 cal T/Cs are not heard about much!
I've NEVER seen one shot!

I believe the G2 muzzleloader barrels were quickly discontinued not long after they were introduced.  I'd be interested in the reasons why, especially before we start launching bullets out of it.  But, that may happen this weekend and by all means we'll be gentle with it.

I bought the one that I just gave to my son on eBay and had to hunt real hard to pick up a forend for it.  If I remember right I got it here in the classifieds and paid more than a fair price for it.  That's o.k. though, I'm glad to have the muzzleloader option for my son now.  This'll open up another season for us.  Better yet was how happy he was with it as a 12th birthday present.

I've got a couple of other muzzleloaders so I know all about smoke and noise alan (funny man).  One thing that I found intersting recently was a pamplet from Hodgdon.  Says that you're not supposed to shoot more than 100 grains in a 45 or 50 caliber muzzleloader.  I specifically remember when I bought my Encore that it was 150 grain capable and was touted as a "Magnum".  I've only shot a "magnum" charge once through my Encore and it wasn't pleasant.  The most I shoot as a general rule is 100 grains and I'm not interested in getting even close to that with the G2.

Update:

After searching over the net, I was able to download a PDF muzzleloader suppliment for the G2.  Looks as though they list the starting load at 100 grains and max load at 150.  Wasn't expecting that!

I had a stainless .50 and can tell you with a 100 grains of blackhorn 209 powder it is a handfull, plenty of recoil. Light and handy to carry. Make sure you have a scope with a lot of eye relief if it is a .50

I've hunted with several TC Hawkins and 90 gr of FFF was a good hunting load in 50 cal. I used 60 gr for a target load.

Why punish your son with a 100 gr load. If it was me I'd start him out with 50 gr and a PRB.
