Sillyness
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:19:17 PM »
I recently bought a new leather sling for my .45-70.  There's this guy on eBay that claims the leather goods he's selling are Amish made.  I don't know bout that but the 2 belts I bought from him to hold my jeans up are the best quality I've ever had...

Anyway I got this beautiful brown leather padded leather sling that looks like it would last the lifetime of my great grand kids and I'm thinking, you know it doesn't match the new recoil pad I bought.  I thought brown would look better with the wood stock but with the black recoil pad and the black oxide frame, maybe I should put the sling on another rifle and buy a black one for my .45-70. On the other hand, I could put the black recoil pad on one of my other guns and order up a brown recoil pad.

I used to be a guy that would wear plaid and stripes at the same time but now it's mostly camo tee's (+ plaid flannels in cold weather) and jeans.  I've never before given a rip if anything is color coordinated.  Maybe something's gone loose in my head with age...

Nice to know you can still find a quality leather belt. Guess I'll have to quit wasteing my time looking in discount stores.

Get a girt from the horse tack shop. That is where the Amish learned leather work. ear

When it comes to guns there are some things that just don't look right - for instance a fancy leather sling on a black rifle or a cheap nylon carry strap next to a fine piece of walnut!

Camo is the perfect clothing.  It goes with anything and you can even mix 'n match different camo patterns - best of all it doesn't even show the chile you dribbled on your belly!

I don't think it is silly at all.  I just came in from "out back" and I'm sitting here in camo coveralls.  The big difference is that now you have the time to get into all the things you let slide in the past.  I think I have all the guns I want.......except perhaps a .32-20 SA revolver.  What I'm doing now is just upgrading with better mounts and glass, nicer stocks, etc.  I might create a couple more shorties......30-30, .445, .223 and .45-70 come to mind.

About 3 or 4 years ago, a local farm went up for sale and an Amish family bought it.  Now there are at least a half dozen Amish family farms in the neighborhood.  They're good hard working people, friendly and helpful.  Excellent neighbors.  We're glad to have them as part of our community.  They've put farms back into production that were going to ruin.  They built a very large, modern barn in less than a week.  A lot of old time residents helped.  It's amazing....they actually have kids that have grown up with respect.  I haven't met an Amish man yet that couldn't shoot.  Like their workmanship, they take pride in their guns too.  I don't believe anyone is going to take their guns away from them very soon.  The women make some beautiful quilts.  Patty has an Amish lady friend that has taught her some of the fine points.

I think the answer to your problem might be to get a plaid rifle sling and a striped recoil pad.

As my Dad has said for years,"too soon old, too late smart" ;) .
Roll with it Tony, its gotcha now..........

Big + on the Amish, we have several communities close by and they are so much more like everyday people used to be when I was growing up. One thing for sure, if/when this crack-pot economy & culture crashes and burns they arent going to be hurt much, if at all.

Keep the sling.  It would make you even HAPPIER if you purchased a black leather sling AND another Handi Rifle to match the sling you have!!  :)

You've started a whole new, great idea.  We could all go out and buy boxes of ammo and then buy or build  Handis to match.....I love it :-*

I do think it's that good.  Here's a link to the eBay listing for the brown one I bought.  As EAR mentioned, the Amish do a lot of horse tack work and I can really see that in the belts and this sling...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/170934683391?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Now that I think about, I think the brown one would look best on my M70 Winny and I'll get a black one for the .45-70 Handi.

I suppose camo does go with everything but I use to think black did too.  There's some interesting hand crafts on fleabay, there's one guy selling hand woven slings made from paracord that look OK if you're into that sort of thing...
