Trapping Pistol or Trapping Rifle?
« on: May 25, 2013, 06:22:30 AM »
I am on the search for a trapping firearm.. I carried a rifle last year and it was generally a pain in the rear. I am going to buy a new gun for trapping this year and was wondering what everyone used?  Most of all my trapping will be water sets for coon and beaver, etc..

 Any and ALL suggestions appreciated

I have used the same H&R revolver for 35 years. I usually use .22 shorts when needed.

generally when trapping i always carried my gpas tip up stevens 22 pistol.just like he did.works very well for dispatching larger predators like coyotes. or a mink that has drug the trap up under some tree roots and tangled the chain where yu cant get him out alive. usually a whack on the head is fine for most animals but sumtimes yu run across a bobcat held by 1 toe that yu really dont want to get that close to.

often tho i wud carry a small rifle.a stevens crackshot or a ruger 10-22 in a poly folding stock.both very accurate.i would carry them when i was looking for a rabbit or squirrel for the pot or for bait.the only down side to carrying a rifle is that i wud sit it down when making a set and walk off and leave it because i wasnt used to having it with me.lol many times i walked back 200yrds thru thigh deep water to retrieve it.

I have a Europeon Arms single action 6 that shoots shorts, longs, long rifles, CBs .22 and also a .22 magnum cylindar as well. I carry a 22 single shot rifle in the truck for the occasional less certain or more senstive dispatches. I have had the pistol for about 18 years.

I ended up with a jennings or bryco 22 belly gun some years ago. I couldn't figure out a use for it because it's too whimpy for even a belly gun and is only accurate real close up. It turned out to be a good trap line gun. Never fails to fire the cheap ammo I feed it. Is super accurate at very close ranges, like you run into with trapping. Fits in the pocket and isn't bulky or heavy. An otherwise useless gun besides dispatching critters up close.

Carried a way to nice and expensive Browning 22 pistol for years because it was what I had. Several years ago I picked up a Heritage Rough rider because I wanted the 22 mag cylinder option. The Heritage is reasonably priced had the 22 mag cylinder with it and has so far been good. If I happen to drop it in the mud or river I don't feel so bad about mucking it up. Lots of gun guys say their cheap junk but for me so far so good. I also now have a Ruger 45/22 model that goes with on the trap line as my son carrys it. There are some advatages to a semi auto with a clip if you have to load and unload a lot. Son and I both have carry permits so just load, strap on in the morning and go.

I can sure understand the upgrade to 44.
I have heard the Ruger Bearcat was created with this in mind.
I found a used one that I really enjoy.
