anyone have firesights on his handi rifle?
« on: May 28, 2013, 04:15:06 AM »
if so, i need advice on front sight height. sorry, but i can read the how-to on figuring front sight height until i turn blue, but i cannot be confident on sight choice. my rifle is a .30-'06. i have the standard sights from a .45-70 i gave my son (he prefers a scope). reckon i could use those?

See Peep and Firesights in the FAQs sticky, there are links to sight height calculators, Brownells seems to have a good one, just measure the barrel and plug in the numbers....

I have Firesight front sights on one of my 45-70s with a WGRS rear, same on my Huntsman. The target was shot at 100yds, sight adjustments made after shots 2 and 3 to center it.

You can also use the Truglo Universals in any of the 4 flavors.  I have a set on my .45-70 22" barrel now and love em.  Shot a bunch this last weekend and these are keepers.  ;)  No movement even with heavy loads, albeit my shoulder almost gave out.  lol

Well, these need dove tails or screw holes tapped.  I guess some have epoxied sights on too and gotten good usage.  I'm currently setting up a .410 mini slugger using a set of Remington 597 sights I got cheap.  Will let you know how the epoxy holds up with slugs, but should be plenty strong.  Probably difficult to undo, however, so you might want to mount the rear sight far enough ahead that you can still use the scope mount base.  8)

Here's kind of a bad picture of mine mounted.

I've got Firesights on one of my 30-30 barrels and I love them. You can get a few more minutes of shooting in during the late afternoon when the bucks are moving. ;)
