I'm going NUTS!
« on: May 28, 2013, 02:25:13 PM »
Had an appointment with my Cardiologist Friday.  She sat me down and told me, No Colestrol, No Carbs, No Sodium.  Have you ever tried to eat without those things, especially the sodium, it's in almost everything.  Saturday took the wife into town and we ate where I could have a good salad.  Sunday kept busy out in the garage and yard.  Sunday took the wife up the Haul Rd to check the Black Bear Bait Stations.  We were gone all day, had a salad when we got home.  This morning got up early and went to the Gym.  Then went to Sportsman's and picked up 2K primers.  Met the wife for lunch, had a salad with water.  Now here I am at home, alone.  There is a Chacolate cake sitting on the kitchen counter, There is a tray of Brownies alongside the cake.  There is two packs of Molasses cookies sitting on the counter.  The large cookie jar is full of Double Stuff Oreos.  I keep getting up and going to the kitchen, no one will know.  But I keep talking myself out of it.  Got to get out of this house, but it's in the 80s outside.  Be good guys, and gals, I'm out of here.

Packaged foods and diner foods are full of  Na.  My rule, if I just have to have sweets, is three small bites, then in the trash.  Watch the salad dressing!

Had a salad for dinner.  But when I got home still on one there.  I broke and had a mollasas cookie, just one, but I had one.  It's late going to bed, that way I won't be tempted.

Telling you what not to eat doesn't seem nearly as helpful as telling you what kinds of things you should be eating. I'm not surprised you're hungry for high calorie food if your meals are just salad. You need calories. Didn't they connect you with a nutritionist? You may want to take a look at Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). They seem to do a better job with issues like nutritional awareness.
Also, why does your family persist in keeping things like cookies and cake on hand? If they cared about you, that stuff would not be in the house as a temptation. They can go out for dessert at some friend's house or a cafe.

Sourdough, since you're going nuts anyway, have you tried eating nuts.  Or are nuts taboo also?

There's salt substitute based on potassium instead of sodium. Check out some of the Fig Newtons, which are a relatively healthy alternative to cookies, and some variations of it have low sodium. I like them a lot.

Then there's home made oatmeal cookies made with applesauce and raisins instead of fat an chocolate chips. Get a good recipe and they are mighty good. It may take some fine tuning to get it the way you want it.

Got told somewhat the same thing about three years ago . I cheat a wee bit . The nurses who went over diet training with me told me it was ok to do so. but only a wee bit. I stopped using salt and you go thru. withdrawal but you get over it. honest . I cut white bread an tates out, I cheat and have a boiled or baked potato once a month. Sugar well I got used to not having it but every so often I cheat and have a cookie or slice of pound cake. But to be honest fruits and veggies take on a new taste after a few mos, Carrots taste like sugar as do many other veggies.
Give it a few mos , get the rest of the family to help by eating better and keeping the bad stuff out of sight . It get better .

I haven't seen it, but I know enough people who got their blood pressure under control by reducing salt.

Yes , I heard it on the radio a week or so ago and nothing more . Wouldn't surprise me though look at eggs and about everything else. I think moderation is the best way but it needs to start young before problems rear up.

We had a strange and memorable case here related to sodium. A guy had out of control blood pressure. Long story short is that his water softener was hooked up to all of his faucets. Usually they are not hooked up to the tap used for drinking water. He was drinking water with enough salt in it to get his blood pressure up. After they fixed the softener connection, he got his blood pressure under control.

Here's what Mayo says about it. The water around here is super hard, so maybe that made a difference.

We have a softener, and the guys that set it up gave us recommended we hook up all the faucets except the kitchen cold water faucet and the ones used for the lawn. That's what we did. Seems to be the normal practice lately around here. We've had ours for over ten years.

Personally, I like hard water. Dang soft water makes it almost impossible to wash all the soap off while showering. My wife wanted it. I guess it does have the advantage of keeping the tub and toilets from mineral staining.

I often see them cut inline where the water comes into the house . Here we have very high acid and both copper water pipe and HWH take a beating.

You can get potassium salt for your softener--- it's more expensive. Salt affects blood pressure in maybe 5% of otherwise healthy people. But, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension from other factors, and other obesity related problems are so prevalent that about half of Americans over 50 are salt sensitive.

Exercise. The key to everything is exercise. HARD exercise. If you do very little physical exercise, your body produces chemicals that cause inflammation--- in your blood vessels, in your heart, in your lungs, everywhere. Those same chemicals signal your body to degenerate and die. It's programmed into your DNA. Back when everyone lived in tribes, the tribal group survival depended on the best use of food by the members most likely to survive. When members of the tribe got too old to run down food, or to dig it up or gather it, they did just like older animals in other groups: herds, prides, packs, etc. They stopped eating, crawled off by themselves, and died. The death signal is inactivity. For homo sapiens this happens sometime after age 50 or so. Even though there is no shortage of food these days, your body KNOWS it's not being used--- it's built into all of us, like a self destruct program.

The good news is if you exercise enough, your body produces other chemicals that get rid of the self destruct chemicals. BUT, you have to exercise like a young person--- you have to do enough physical exercise to break a full body sweat every single day. Those inflammation chemicals have to be cleared every 24 hours. Every day you don't is a day you're telling your body to prepare for death. The rules are that simple. Sit around and die, or get off your butt and live a while longer. From age 50 on, your number one priority has to be to keep yourself healthy. You aren't as strong as you used to be, and you can't recover like you used to. Prevention is the goal, and exercise is how you get there.
If you give up, THEY don't have to win.

While I don't disagree with your support for real exercise, I'm suspect of your "chemistry".  Care to share the names of these, "self destruct chemicals" and the exact metabolic process by which they are, "cleared"?

The C6 family of cytokines, AKA Il (interleukin)1, Il6, and others of the GCSF chemicals have been shown to play a significant role in degenerative diseases and long term inflammatory processes.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9159205

Other cytokines, in particular, the C10 cytokines , Il10, 11, 12, and others of the GM-CSF chemicals ( released with strenuous exercise) counteract the first group and mediate cellular response.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12690937

For a decent lay explanation, read "Younger Next Year" by Crowley and Lodge. It's a little preachy and dumbed 'way down, but the science is accurate, and it's at least realistic.

Pretty good summary. Dang I hate to have to face the truth and sweat like that. much less being hungry. If we don't have a limiting factor, being hungry most of the time and sweating a lot seems to to be a person's best chance. ear

You can make a choice.

I'm pushing 71 and takes Meds for several things, one of them is blood sugar. Not bad enough for insulin injection, so far a pill that encourages your own system to produce enough suffices.

My Blood pressure needs regulating and salt is one item. Since I don't add salt to anything, just  being stuck with whatever is in the bought food it is nothing I can control other than living like a vegetarian and consuming bland food. Cholesterol is also being controlled with Med so I don't do without some fat.

So I got a choice, live a few more years while having no food enjoyment in an already pretty funless/boring life or eat what I like with moderation of the "bad" stuff.
I don't smoke and alcohol is consumed very sparingly. There are weeks in which not a drop is used.
Easy choice for me.

Good post, BBF. I'm not a vegetarian, but do like a lot of meatless foods, and I cook from several cuisines that use little meat. It doesn't have to be bland, not by a long shot. We routinely have foods where meat is not missed at all. A lot of the mediterranean foods, like hummus on home made low-salt tortillas with lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber is one example. Lots of chinese style things are likewise good, and don't need to have a lot of salt.

I don't like salty things. And don't use much at home. When I do go out for fast food, or have my annual dose of liverwurst like I did this past week, it's so salty it burns the inside of my mouth. Not literally with blisters or anything, but its a strong sensation. I guess that says something about how salty processed foods are.

More or less gave up hunting because we don't eat much red meat anymore. Not for ethical reasons, just because we'd rather eat other stuff.

Well I've got the solution then, get yourself a wet suit and wear it on warm, or hot days when you just take a walk.  I guarantee you'll sweat like a pig.  Maybe that's what's keeping me going.  I wear my swet suit all winter when I go kayaking; I don;t seem to need it in the summer.

REAL Chinese food is actually pretty healthy, but you won't see it in any Chinese restaurant in the US. Actually, you can say that about a lot of different ethnic foods Mediterranean, Mexican, Thai, Korean--- it's when it gets Americanized that it becomes bad for you. We just overdo it--- too much salt, too much red meat, too much grease, too many calories.

I live on the border and I get "real Mexican"  food......full of lard, salt, carbs, and red meat.  The Mexican population has a terrible diabetic and obesity problem.
