YUKKKKK !
« on: May 30, 2013, 04:54:32 AM »
I have been going to a little ol café for YEARS---always good food and good service.
This morning I had probably one of the worse breakfast meals I have ever had----anywhere.
The hashbrowns were burned and mushy in the middle---so I did eat them. The toast was burned---scratch the toast.
I ordered a waffle---they are always good----------WELL----- it was done like the toast.
I will give them one more try----BUTTTTTT.
Blessings

We had a restaurant like that within walking distance of home, so my wife and I would go there on Saturday mornings and have breakfast. Then something like that happened. Service got bad abruptly. Food got bad. We never went back. It went out of business within a year of that, and was sold to another guy that turned it into a bar (which we don't go to.)

Too bad. Good breakfast places are hard to find. My favorite for a long time has been McDonalds. I like the egg McMuffin and the parfaits and the oatmeal and the coffee (so long as I add cream and sugar, usually drink black elsewhere.)

I'd say wait a few weeks and give them another chance. They may have had some staffing problems and need to get past that. One of the things I lament is the loss of the art of being a good egg man. You used to be able to go to most any restaurant or cafe and get a good breakfast, but it's getting harder all the time. Same with breakfast pertaters. Now home fries are deep fried. The used to be done artfully on the flat top, slow and dee-lish. I consider it a lost art. Sad thing is that it costs about the same and takes about the same time to do it well as it does to do a bad job of it.

By the way, I tried Burger King breakfasts. OMG! Horrible!!! Tried a couple of them. REAL BAD.

MacDonalds gives money to Handgun Control each year last I heard.
It will be a cold day in Pago Pago before i stop there for their imitation food.
Won't believe they wanted to poison you, might be compassionate and speak with
the owner, see if there was an extenuating circumstance.
Don't slam the door on them, that is why they are getting harder to find.

Probably supported by Rupert Murdock too, but most gun owners would still watch Fox if he does ;)
I believe MacDonald's are franchise owned. I know the one in my home town is, and some, I would think are gun owners and  shooters.

I seldom eat out, but they do have good Sausage biscuits  ;) I trust the cook at home, but lately her biscuits aren't up to par. I didn't say that either :-X

If you like sausage biscuits and want them at home, get some Jimmy Dean original sausage meat. mmmmmy favorite! And learn to make your own biscuits. They are easy to do, you just need to pick the kind you like. It may take a couple of iterations to dial it in the way you like. My son likes biscuits and nobody else in my house does, so he makes them here for himself. Does them just the way he likes em. Takes less than an hour to make em. Flour, baking powder, salt, milk or buttermilk, a baking sheet, and an oven is about all you need.

Anyone here old enough to remember reflector ovens?  The shiny metal had a top and bottom and a shelf between.  A man could go hunting or fishing or camping with one of those and the mixings for his kind of biscuit, and bake 'em up for himself without worrying about politics and restaurants.

I see now where you can buy light weight fold-up aluminum reflector ovens.  Just sit it at your fire and bake away.

They were popular 50  -  60 years ago when folks had to make do outdoors.  It always seemed to me to be a peaceful way to spend time in the mountains.  Set up camp early with plenty of time to cook and bake.  The good ol days.

I do remember them, but not from 50-60 years ago. They are very popular right now in parts of the world where there is little cooking fuel but lots of sun. Deserts, for example. There are all kinds of really ingenious portable ovens. They don't need to be made of metal either. You can probably find examples made of cardboard and other unexpected materials by searching the web.

I agree with Shootall, maybe the regular cook is on vacation, or left. I've been to places that had good food then all of a sudden it wasn't so good. Most of the time its due to the regular cook being off work or a new one has been hired. Although it is pretty hard to screw up breakfast. Especially for someone that makes breakfast as part of their business. I bet just about everyone here could whip up a pretty darn good breakfast. Its pretty bad when a business can't do it right.

has the eatery changed ownership?
that's put a lot of cafes and other
non-food related businesses out
of business these last couple of decades.
folks buy a very successful business of
one kind or another and find they have
no affinity for that kind of work and
end up running it off the rails. i've
observed that with eating joints, car dealers,
and a lot of other businesses.

For years i had three  cafes locally that had great home cooking. But over the last two or three years the quality of the food in all have suffered!
I think it is due to the sharp rise in food costs. they cat back every way they can trying to keep the price of a meal down and quality suffers!
I don't know what they can do as it is a lot of people are not eating out because of cost.

Though not local I used to travel through a small town early in the morning fairly regularly and always stopped in a joint that made the best pancakes I've ever enjoyed. It was owned by an old geezer and he sold the place. I ate there after it sold exactly once. The pancakes were as tasteless as cardboard and about as tough.

I love pancakes and waffles but they are not nice to an old guy that can't burn off the calories like he used too. Now I "enjoy" one of those 90 calorie breakfast bars that are little better than cardboard.  :(

Honestly, I would be a hot day up here if I spend close to 1 hour to get myself some breakfast. :o

Reflector ovens are easy to make with just cardboard or thin paneling & aluminum foil.

There is a limit to how hot they can get but if the rays are kept focused and the panels are large enough, they will cook most food fairly quickly.  We made several versions of them in various Science Labs over the years that I was teaching.

If one acquires a Fresnel lens to focus the rays, they can be made smaller and much more efficient...similar to using a hand magnifier.

i'm assuming the uninformed readers
will know that there are two ovens
discussed here- a reflector oven used
with a fire like has been done for a
couple of centuries, and a solar reflector
oven that is used to concentrate the sun's
rays on a food item to cook it?

Or you can wrap your food in foil and place on a bed of hot coals near the fire.  ;)

Kid cooks anymore are what are ruining restaurants. They slam these kids through on how to cook
then take off and don't supervise them. The low adjusted pay scales are another problem and its
the same with the waitresses. The lure of good tips isn't always what its cracked out to be.
A restaurant next to a casino you would think would be a great place to work, but it isn't.
Customers largely have just lost all their money, are drunk on their tails, or are in a very bad mood.

I don't remember the reflector ovens that was before my time. But I do still have one of those old
engine manifold ovens around here someplace from the 1960s. I guess they worked I don't know
i think this one fits a 350 Chevy. Oh yummy motor food but did people actually use these things?
I also have one of those round window mount air conditioners that were swamp coolers for a car.
All my dads old stuff the things he had would be a pickers delight. He also had an old Sinclair oil
company sign that has a big dinosaur on it. He kept receipts on everything including some from
gas stations that were restaurants, sporting goods stores, garages, or just about anything a
traveler would need on the road. One I have showed where him and my mom filled up with gas that was 15 cents a gallon, had a turkey dinner, and he bought a Winchester shotgun all in the same
place. Somewhere in the outback of Pennsylvania, the place was also a hotel and had a mini movie
theater called Earls one stop.

I had one of those mobile "swamp" coolers. They work reasonably well if the outside humidity is close to zero %. and you do at least 40mph.
