Night force riflescopes
« on: May 31, 2013, 01:27:41 AM »
Sourdough posted on here about his night force riflescope, got me to thinking. So I checked out the cost on them. Comparable to the German & euro mfg scopes. I don't remember knowing anyone that uses them. Or reading reviews about them.

What's the opinions about the nightforce riflescope. Is it made in the USA ?

Nightforce optics are made in the USA.  Seems like I see them talked about a lot in the benchrest crowd, supposed to be top end stuff that folks prefer over the European optics.

Never owned one, but several federal agencies used them when I was an instructor.  They seemed very bright, very well made, tough, and with repeatable W&E adjustments.  Guys who were using them liked them.

There may be a few european scopes with better glass but nothing on the market is any better when it comes to precision repeatable ajustments and lots of it.

I know lots of guys that serve in the military.  Seals, Marines, guys that shoot long distances, and require a rugged scope to handle the rough handling of combat.  When talking to these guys, most recommended the Night Force.  So that was the way I went, and have not regretted it one bit.  It really makes things seem like you can reach out and touch them.  Clear, and bright.  I have never used anything else that compares.

Marine friends tell me they take their own personnel Night Force scope over to the big sand box.  They replace the scope the Marines Issue to them with their Night Force for the duration of their time over there.  That's good enough for me.  Yes they are expensive, but so is the rifle it is setting on.  I was shooting last week with a group of guys from Ft Wainwright.  One of the spotters came over and took a couple of shots with my Weatherby.  He asked me why I am limiting myself to 1200 yards.  With that scope on that gun your range should be 2000 yards.  Wooh, too far for me.  I'm not capable of doing that kind of shooting.  I have a hard enough time with 1000 yards.  But is nice to know an expert thinks so highly of my scope and rifle.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I have been shooting with a guy that has 2 NF scopes both for long range. He also has several Leopold scopes of very high quality. Both brands are very good. Like he says the cost difference is the thing. If you hunt in rough weather or terrain then go NF. If your shooting is mostly range work go Leopold . If it is important to have the best  go NF.

I own one, an NSX 5.5x22x56.  I also spoke with the owner of Nightforce some years ago...forgot his name, but he was a nice guy.  He told me that his scopes have the thickest aluminum tubing.  He also told me that Swarovski scopes have better "color resolution" (or something like that), which I understood to mean that the colors seen through a Swarovski scope are more true than his Nighforce scopes.  But he also approximately remarked something along the lines of "but when your hunting, what does it matter if a Swarovski scope shows you 'the true shade of brown?'"  I believe he also did mention that his scopes are used in the military as well, and that one opposition fighter shot at one of our guys, and that the bullet went through the side of our guy's NSX scope and, although he could not change the zoom, the scope still functioned well and our guy continued to use it in battle.

Based on our talk, I bought an NSX scope.  I must admit, it is huge, and it weighs a lot.  I have it mounted on a Remington Sendero Stainless Fluted in .300 Win Mag (which is also heavy) in Warne HD stainless rings and bases.  This rigs weighs about as much as a small car.  I obviously use this only when hunting in a blind, so it just sits there until I'm ready to shoot it.  Otherwise, if I walked around with it, then I would be in better physical shape than Lebron James.  In any event, my NSX scope is a great scope.  The quality is extremely good, and clarity is excellent, the knobs are first rate, and it also has an illuminated reticle that is one of the best that I have ever used (and I own SEVERAL scopes with Illuminated reticles).

If you want a scope that is built like a tank (and weighs like one), then the NSX is a great scope.
