Not happy with this!
« on: May 31, 2013, 03:35:25 AM »
I called in an order to Mid Way USA today and was asked for the last few numbers on my credit card. Huh??? That made no sense to me so I asked, is that all you need? The answer in short is that they keep the numbers on hand for later use!! With all of the fraud going on, I am not at all sure I like that idea. I realize that they do not have to accept my orders for supplies, but I am on the verge of canceling any further business with them. Am I being overly protective? What are your thoughts? I have made a call into "Larry's" line, but have yet to receive an answer.

I'm assuming that they do it like the credit card companies do. They know your phone number when you call, and they get a list of expected credit card numbers. This is similar to what Amazon does with their online orders: you create an account and the list of cc numbers is associated with it.

Credit card fraud can come from almost anywhere. It's always worth being vigilant. One thing you could do is get a second credit card that has a very low limit on it. Some gift type credit cards work that way. You can get them at banks, and use just those for mail order.

The ones to stay away from are debit cards because they don't offer the kinds of protections that credit cards have.

I do kind of what Conan said.
I have a relatively low limit card I use for most of my online purchases and keep it paid down.
Just about every business keeps track of this data.
If I ever get burned Visa/MC has always taken care of fraudulent charges.

GREENRIVERS. Do you mean your pin # on the back of the card ?? We were asked for it trying to reserve a motel room, we refused and hung up. Nobody had ever asked
before, and they aint getting it. We don't give that # to anybody. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

everyone asks for the 3 digits on the
back anymore. that's to insure that
you actually have the card in hand
as opposed to a hacker reading the
number off his terminal where he just
found your card number.
they can't check your i.d. to make sure
you are who you're supposed to be.
i get more upset at the stores when in line
and the cashiers don't ask for photo i.d.

it's all an unfortunate necessary evil of
the electronic society we live in this day.

My bank offers this security for free.

Anytime my CC is used outside of Canada I get an immediate e-mail informing me. For in country use I can set a $ limit which will go unreported. If someone charges more I get a message.  I like it.

They cant use the last four digits of your card to do anything. A lot of on line sites will ask if you want to use the card with the last four digits of xxxx(one you have used before) as a convenience. But hey if you are uncomfortable its your business and your dollars.

I believe all but the last 4 # are routing numbers. Just tells them the kind of card and who issued it. The last 4# identify the owner. It's just like you check routing # and the last 4 is your acct #.  ;)

Old, if your going to do mail or phone buying you half to give your card info to the retailer. The most important thing to remember is only give that info to merchants that you imitate the call. If they call you you really don't know who your talking to.

Just got a new card, my last one got hacked, and someone in England cleaned out my account in five minutes.  The bank put it back, but I had to get a new card.  Only the last four digits on the front, and the three on the back changed.  Unless you have an account established, they can not process your card with out those three digits on the back.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I've been hacked twice with Discover.  They have always taken care of me.  I won't have a debit card where they can drain your account.  I also have Life Lock.  They scanned my wife's wallet when she was in Wisconsin.....some fraudulent  charges made........  USAA Master Card stepped up and made it go away.  Cards were always canceled and new ones sent ASAP.

Perhaps I am more unsuspecting than many. I do believe that Midway as many other companies are upstanding entities with no intent. However, I do believe that once a transaction is completed, the bank draw routing should be discontinued. Leaving it on file as a "convenience" and asking for the ending numbers so that the sales staff can then see and verify the card should not happen. It leaves information not needed available for those who do hack their files. Something that we hear of too often. Keeping another card for such transactions is a good idea. One I will employ. Thank you for the information and idea.

I went on the Mid Way USA spot to order a few things I needed for gun cleaning. The stuff came to a little over $34 and the shipping was $19! No thanks! I will find some where else to trade!

You definately have to compare prices + shipping when shopping online.

I understand that, however, my f 250 gets about 15 mpg. Gas is $3.34 a gallon and $19.00 gets me 5.5 gallons that might get me to town and back. but then I have spent 3 hours getting ready and going and coming, not to mention wear and tear on me and the truck. personally I think its a wash. Some things I want to put my hands on before I buy so I go but somethings like ammo and such its just easier to find, (if ya can,) and get it shipped to the front door.
