Do your kids have a student loan?
« on: June 01, 2013, 12:31:14 AM »
Or do you or your grandkids have a student loan?  With interest on your savings accout less than 1%..do you wonder why student loan rates are at 6.3% ?   Here's your answer...
  http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3024826/posts

  The high rates are to...
      A) Pay for Obamacare
      B) Pay federal debt
      C) Pay for other student's free rides

    Where's the justice ?  Oh yes, the head of the dept of "justice" below;

The profits from student loans go to the banks that lend the money, same as a mortgage or car loan. Why else do you think they are fighting the Elizabeth Warren proposal?
If you give up, THEY don't have to win.

  Why is anyone with a lick of common sense fighting Elizabeth Warren's proposal ?  The answer is simple;
    1) they don't want the government to grow any larger...after all, in the current congressional testimonies, we find that the dept heads..of ..justice, State and IRS don't have a clue to what is going on in their department, and they are saying so.
   2) Nobody who is alert and breathing, should want to take that dark ride into Marxism.
According to her, students should get a loan at prime rate..they probably are, but with Obamacare, federal debt and Pell grant costs tacked on.
If she wanted to do something worthwhile, she should deal with the university system she is so familiar with..and coerce them to place their tuitions at a sensible and reasonable level.

The "education" system today is a racket..   There is no earthly reason they should chrarge so dearly for a student to attend.  It is "big government" working hand-in-hand with with "big education"..  So long as the government keeps loaning, and the students keep borrowing..."big education" will keep raising it's prices !
In return, the "big government" advocates get their socialist/marxist doctrine..shoveled into young minds,  young minds that have not been taught critical thinking for decades in the public school system... which is another facet of "big education"..

Some of the people getting those loans, needs to have their head examined as well.  They look at it as free money, and they have no intention of ever paying it back.  One woman that works with my wife owes over $150,000.00 and laughs about it.

I met a woman a few months back, that I dated back in the early 70s.  She is working as a Custodian at the Gym I go to.  She was getting off so I took her to Denny's for pie and tea.  We sat and talked about what had happened during the last 40 some odd years.  She has been married four times and divorced four times.  Found out she was taking classes at UAF.  She told me as long as she was taking classes she did not have to pay the loans back.  She has been living on her student loans for years.  How much does she owe?  Will she ever pay it back?  Probably not, I think she owes more than she could ever make in what's left of her life time.

My son Skyler graduated two weeks ago.  He is a Biologist, and working in the Research Lab at UAF.  He starts his masters Program in the fall.  Sky has no student loans, and now that he is working in research he is getting grants for the work he is doing and to continue his education.  These are not Federal Grants, they are from Private Industry.  There are ways of getting an education with out taking out loans.  It's called work.  Skyler worked many different jobs while he was going to school.  His ability to operate equipment helped him get the higher paying summer jobs.  And he stayed at home where he did not have to pay rent.  He looked at moving on to campass but decided that was just too much money to live there.  He could buy an awful lot of gasoline for what it cost to live in a dorm room.

By the way, he has been approached by recruiters from agencies in DC.  They told him that if he came to work in DC there was ways to get his student loans forgiven.  They were shocked when he told them he had no loans.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I know folks who lived off the student loans and laughed about it.  They used the money to buy a car, go to the bar, pay rent....anything but school.  They have no intention of repaying them. Some make in excess of $200.000 per year.  My wife received a Ph.D. with no loans incured.  I paid for daily living expenses, but she worked as a TA, RA,teacher at the local community college, received research grants and paid her education expenses.  We had no loans to pay back when she graduated.

These slackers may joke about their student loans and their intent not to pay them..until the right person gets on their case.  I have a grandson whose job in part, is to collect delinquent student loans.  I don't know offhand what his success rate is, but he makes well into the 6 figure category.
Yes; he collects from basket weavers and social workers..but he also collects fron Doctors and lawyers ..which are probably the more difficult cases to crack..

I recently heard a financial adviser say...

"The same Father that would laugh hysterically if his Son asked him for a down payment on a $50,000 Porsche often believes that it's a great idea for his Son to take out a student loan for $250,000."

I just heard where a study was done that showed there was NO advantage to having an advanced degree. On average students with an advanced degree neither found jobs easier or got paid more (at least at entry level).   The study showed advance degrees are a moneymaker for the universities and little more..............
Just another worthless opinion!!

It depends on the field of study. Advanced degrees are very valuable and more than pay for themselves in a lot of fields. A masters degree in puppetry isn't worth the paper its printed on, but a masters degree in civil engineering can be very valuable indeed.

As for the study, it may be one of those things that averages results in a misleading way. In other words, it is knowingly designed and intended to deceive. For example, average life expectancy around 1900 in the US was about 49. That gives the idea that a 50 year old was a real old timer. Not true. The average includes a very high infant mortality rate. Lots of people lived into their 70s and beyond back in 1900 (not nearly as many as today, though). If the calculation were changed to be average life expectancy of people who had reached the age of five, the number would have been a lot higher.

It continually amazes me how little effort is needed to dupe an innumerate public.

Speaking of age, the fastest growing demographic by age today is people over age 85. That's good news for us gray haired bi-focal wearing goomers.

So many sudents get loans for a degree going nowhere. My wife is close to paying off her student loan, the thing is, she knew what she wanted to acomplish. Was working for the medical lab before she even graduated. So many graduate and find out it might take 5-10 years of real world job experience to get the pay scale they thought, right out of college. And the vast majority of college professors teach courses, that they never really worked in. Some jobs yes, many no. gypsyman

I had a student loan. Made enough at my grocery store cashier job and later at a cooperative education job to pay as I went, until I finally realized that if I borrowed enough to go straight thought to graduation and get the real job, I would end up with more money at the end of that year. Only borrowed about $3000; wasn't hard to pay it off. Of course that was 30 years ago.

Pretty sure the degree allowed me to make more than without it, but I did get a marketable degree. Of course that's based on anecdotal evidence that there are not any grocery store cashiers who own homes in my neighborhood.

For my son, we have been paying as we go. But we "encouraged" him to get a marketable degree, instead of pursuing the video game music composition degree he wanted when he was 17.

At 56 one thing that I have seen change is the idea that every one should go to college . Not every one is cut out for that kind education. I know I wasn't but I was good with my hands and as it turned out had a good mechanical aptitude. I took some classes at a county trade school after high school for graphic arts that wile not a degree did get me in the door at a lot of print shops and that led to a apprenticeship at a large news paper and after five years got me a journeyman's card. I have been printing papers for thirty four years now and hope to retire in six more. I will have been pushing paper for fourty years when I quit. In that time I have paid my bills bought a house have had a number of cars and saved enough to retire ( I hope ) and been able to have the things that make life fun.

The best part of a apprenticeship is that thy pay you to learn a trade and it is going to be for some thing thy need and you can use and more often then not thy have a job for you when you finish and thy tend to be good paying at that.  There are a lot of places looking for guys willing to work with there hands and are not afraid to get them dirty that go unfilled.

I think that what this country needs is for more people to realise that there kid may not be the collage type and that there is no shame in having them not turn out to be doctors and lawyers and such.

It is to bad we can't get more places to offer these type of training programs an bring more manufacturing to this country and not some low pay assembly jobs but skilled labor jobs were you can make enough to pay your way through life. You can't build a great economy with every one sitting at desk , somebody has to be able to do the work too.
