Savage 219 30-30
« on: June 03, 2013, 02:44:00 PM »
Wow!  I stopped by a friend's gun shop today and I saw a 219 on the rack in 30-30.  Oh!  I love that rifle!  It is so trim and light and sweet handling!  The worst part is that I have one coming of my own.  A friend has one in 30-30AI and sent it to me a couple years ago to work up some loads and see if I liked the cartridge.  I did, and I tried my best to talk him out of that one.  But I told him the first thing I would do is cut the barrel down from 24" and shorten the pull. (I like short rifles)  So we did some trading and he sent an extra frame he has to a 'smith to fit a 20" barrel to.  Now I'm waiting for it to come back.  I was waiting patiently until I handled this one today and now I can hardly wait!  Hoping it gets back soon!  44 Man

I knew a guy who must have had a dozen of those Savage .30/30's.  It's the only rifle he ever used for deer hunting.

He just couldn't resist buying one whenever he came across one in decent shape!  He just loved those little rifles.

Ed tells me I'll have my 20" 219 in about two weeks!  I'm really excited to get this gun!  44 Man

.

FWIW, I'd never cut down any of mine.

They come into their own with their issue 26" bbl - heck, you have to buy a Ruger #1 or a Browning High Wall to get a barrel that long !

It's not getting cut down.  Ed had an extra factory 20" barrel and an action w/butt stock.  He took them to William's for the barrel to be fitted and to put a forearm on it.  (Williams has lots of 'old' parts available)  If it takes much longer, I'm going to pick it up and fit the barrel myself!  I will need to cut the butt stock down as I need a length of pull no longer than 13 1/2" and the 219 come with 14 1/2" and I can't live with that.  Hoping to hear from Ed today.  44 Man

I came across my third one last year for $89 in a gun shop! I couldn't fill the form out fast enough. These guns are excellent cast bullet shooters that will help them last even longer.

Sad, sad.  The 'smith with my 219 has not done anything as it also needs a firing pin and he wasn't able to locate one so he has done nothing on the gun yet.  Good news is that Ed says he has collected parts for those since he likes them also and he's sure he has what it needs.  So I have more waiting to do yet.  :(  But the deal is still good and Ed says I 'WILL' have my 219 yet this summer.  I'd love to find one for $89.  If I had the extra money, I'd go and get the one for $319 that I saw!  But I will wait, (though not willingly) and keep shooting my old H&R Topper in the meantime.  44 Man

IIRC the first issue had a real striker assembly, the later two an internal hammer.

Have one in 30-30 restocked with local black cherry.  Have a Wms. Guide peep and a fiber optic front.  This combo has taken a number of deer, great carry rifle.  Also have one that was an original 22 Hornet and now converted to 22 K Hornet, this scoped.  Great little varmint rifle.  Always looking for another too as they are great rifles.

Those 219s were a beautiful piece of work.  I had a 219L  that L stands for side lever, and it was nice, but not near a s clean lines as the earlier 219.
I gave that .22 Hornet to a grandson 8-10 years ago.
Those guns do have a reputation for occasionally using an extra firing pin, but if you have the pieces to the old one, a good smith should be able to turn out a duplicate, and harden/temper it.
