Anti-Religion Group Blasts Teen Valedictorian’s Prayer  Posted in Top Stories | 0 comments Anti-Religion Group Blasts Teen Valedictorian’s Prayer Jun 6, 2013 Print This Post
  By Todd Starnes
The Freedom From Religion Foundation blasted what it called the “open defiance” of a valedictorian who delivered The Lord’s Prayer during a high school graduation ceremony last Saturday in South Carolina.

Roy Costner, a senior at Liberty High School in Pickens, created national attention when he ripped up his pre-approved graduation speech and instead led the crowd in a recitation of The Lord’s Prayer.
A video of the speech was posted on YouTube and has since gone viral. It shows the 18-year-old setting aside his speech.
“I think most of you will understand when I say, ‘Our Father, who art in heaven,” he said as the crowd began to cheer.
He concluded his remarks by pointing to the sky and saying, “For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.”

The school district had been in a battle over public prayers after the FFRF filed a complaint objecting to what they called an “unconstitutional prayer practice.”
They hold the school district responsible for Costner’s open act of defiance and what they called a string of problematic religious violations.
“The valedictorian who so insensitively inflicted Christian prayer on a captive audience at a secular graduation ceremony, is a product of a school district which itself set an unconstitutional example by hosting school board prayer,” FFRF co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor said in a prepared statement.

A school district spokesperson said the valedictorian will not be penalized for what he did and Costner told Fox News that he has absolutely no regrets.
“I’m happy with what I did,” Costner said. “I want this to glorify God. I want to use this as a witnessing tool and I hope others will stand up for God in our nation.”
He got the idea to deliver the prayer about two weeks ago when he learned that he had been selected as the top academic student in the graduating class. He was summoned to the principal’s office.
“She informed us that we could not have anything about religion or talk about God or Allah or whoever we choose to worship,” he said. “And they had to approve the speech prior to me going onto stage.”

The prayer controversy had gripped the small South Carolina community for quite some time – and many locals took issue with a group from Wisconsin causing problems.
“Our community is very passionate about prayer in our schools,” Costner told Fox News. “I began writing the speech and I knew from the start that I was going to include prayer.”
He talked it over with his father, the youth pastor at Fellowship Community Church. And he also sought the counsel of other pastors in the area.
“They wanted me to make sure I was doing it for God and not myself,” he said.
So Costner spent the next few days in deep prayer and Bible study.

“I asked God exactly what He wanted me to do,” he explained. “I was trying to think of a prayer that would suit all denominations. That’s why I went with The Lord’s Prayer.”
And on graduation day a very nervous Costner took his place at the ceremony – with a serious case of the jitters.

“I was extremely nervous,” he said. “I didn’t know what kind of reaction I was going to get. I didn’t know which way it was going to go.”
And there was another problem. Costner’s speech had already been placed in a binder – on the platform. He would not be able to bring a copy of his replacement speech on stage.
What happened will be remembered in Pickens for quite some time – when an 18-year-old boy defied a group of atheists, agnostics and freethinkers.

“I was always taught to stand for what I believe in,” he said. “That’s what I believe in. I was thanking my God before everyone. I wanted to give him a shout-out.”
As for his critics, Costner quoted a passage of Scripture from the Gospel of Matthew.
“If you deny me among men, I will deny you to the Father,” he said.

He also had a special message to the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
“We are not in a country where we have freedom from religion,” he said. “We have freedom of religion.”
Costner said he will be attending Clemson University in the fall where he will study computer science.

Agreed Sir. About time Christians stood up for God, let satans supporters plug their ears or leave. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I'm curious, what would your reaction have been if he was a devout Muslim or(     )fill in the blank and given thanks to his Deity? :-\

Good for him!

Seeing as how the community is obviously predominately Christian I'd say his speech was on the right topic, given at the right time, and at the right place.  If he were a muslim graduating from Baghdad High then a muslim prayer would have been appropriate.

PC has been taken to an extreme level of ridiculousness.  Pretty soon everyone will have to remain totally silent for fear someone somewhere might possibly be offended by a spoken word.

If I were attending a graduation ceremony in Somalia I would say Amen.  But the last I checked South Carolina is still part of the USA.  ;)

It makes my heart sing to hear that at least one Christian has enough faith and strength to stand up for what he believes. God Bless him!

So most of you are at least OK if not elated with the guy that disregarded the rules and not nearly so much with the young woman in Alabama that wanted to wear a feather.
I call that Situation Ethics.

bbf. The rules of no prayers were made by pantywetter anti Christian liberals, and are wrong. In the girls case as I've said before, the school should have kept it's big mouth shut. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

You are aware that the school with the big mouth, Escambia Academy, is a Christian school.
Could they be pantywetter anti Christian liberals? ;)

Well I guess you could say that, then I would say and your point is? When prayers start breaking the rules then the rules need to be broken. Call it whatever you want!

I'm a stickler in some instances, this is one of them so I beg to differ, Rules need to be changed not broken if you want to remain a Country of Laws.
Different but similar to picking out which Amendment you want to follow or which part of the Bible you want to obey and which part(s) you want to ignore.

I can see your point but when it comes to prayers being excluded from school I just am more jihadist. I am tired of a pitiful few making rules for the majority! Civil disobedience works for me!

So you are at least okay with throwing the 1st amendment to the Constitution out the window.  Are you one of those who believe that the Constitution is a living/evolving document?

I never said I was okay with the fact that the girl broke the school's rules.  I may have said that the rule is kind of stupid and that the punishment is a little harsh for the nature of the "crime".

If The Lord isn't real, why do they try so hard to forbid any mention of Him, His word or works?

I'm always annoyed (rightly or wrongly) when "separation of church and state" is brought up when discussing Constitutional issues.

Nowhere in the document does it say church and state have to be separated - it merely guarantees the individual has the right to choose which (if any) religion they want.

Just to be accurate 'prayer' and devotional acts are not outlawed in schools.  A student or teacher can pray all they want by themselves. Mandatory nobody is suggesting "mandatory".. and 'show' group praying is not actually permitted unless in a religious study group or club.....praying off school grounds by students and teachers is of course no problem. Better not be!! Using public schools to advance devotional causes is nowadays frowned upon owing to separation of church from state principles Just as with most Lefties you have things reversed!  The 1st amendment says to KEEP STATE OUT of the church !! ......which  imo  the Founder's believed, otherwise they would have distinctly written and commented on the government they were setting up was to be some kind of theocracy_ _which so far gratefully it is not.  Wrong again;  Article 1 says that Congress shall stay OUT of church business.  Don't try to dictate beliefs or put fences around those beliefs....just keep hands off!
Too many people just don't understand the first ten articles of  the Bill of Rights.  The Bill of Rights outlines the RIGHTS of the PEOPLE.  They are called "amendments" because the same people who drew up the constitution saw that  certain unscrupulous politicians even then, were trying to chip away at the PEOPLE"S rights..so they adopted 10 amendments right away, to protect the rights OF THE PEOPLE.  That's why BHO, who worshi[ps at the altar of huge, overpowering government, calls it the "Bill of NEGATIVE Rights"...simply because it protects the people from the government!
Moreover, many Christians, particularly the evangelical or fundamentalist sects, wax about a War against Christianity, yet their ranks and effects on American society have never been so great.   Christians and to a lesser extent, Jews are what made this nation great..and what has for centuries, kept the peace and prosperity going strong.  We don't NEED any jihadists tearing it down into tribal warfare...
.
Methinks, somebody in the school knew in advance this valedictorian would do exactly what he did.  Possibly so.. Perhaps they are  wise beyond their years also..

As usual I see a little storm brewing between you two. Argue your points without the little personal digs at each other. We don't need a Bible lesson here or a discussion on who knows better the interpretation of the Constitution or Bill of Rights. ;)

From the Top:
I'm not covered by or subject to your Constitution being Canadian. I am certainly not in the position to suggest throwing out any of the Amendments or even suggest doing so.

If I was a resident of the USA I'm sure I would consider the Constitution  just fine as it was written without "progressive" interpretation.

I am aware that there are changes possible with approval of all of the States which I presume means the citizenship of each State has to support it.

Lastly, I agree with your opinion on the harshness factor, at least the fine is over the top and probably not enforceable.
