reloading 45 S&W schofield
« on: June 09, 2013, 04:14:33 AM »
Need a good load for the 45 S&W Schofield with the speer 225 grain HP .451 diam bullet. Have on hand Bullseye, Herco, HS6 ,Bluedot , HS7,2400 powders. What a load for shooting in my Blackhawk for wife or daughters but stout enough to use for hog defence on deer stands.

Not a lot of data for those powders / bullet combo out there , your best bet would be to try and either find some 45 Auto Rim data and work up from there or better yet , just go with starting 45 LC loads .

Here's just one place to look.  I don't think 45 LC data would be a good idea.  There's data available in a lot of different manuals for this round.

I was thinking of using 45LC case's not the shorter schofield with the starting loads . Sometimes my brain works faster than my fingers and other times its the other way around .  ??? :o :-\ :P

Sorry I misunderstood.  Glad that Zackaroo didn't though.  ;)

Speer offers CAS loads using some of the powders you mentioned for the 225 and 230s.

I'm still not convinced that a light load with his bullet choice will be as effective as he hopes , shooting hogs with a soft HP like the Speer , I don't think he'll get the penetration that he's needing .

I agree.  Years ago I had an old schofield and anything over 800 fps with 230 cast slugs was pushing it.

You guys are steering me away from that bullet. I have some hard cast 200 grain bullets SWC  that are .454  diameter. I think that would be better what is the verdict of the jury? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? I am lost but easily led. I would use powders listed,

Take some 45LC case's , load up a handful of the 200's with a charge of 12.5g of Bluedot , see how those do , might just be the ticket your looking for .  ;)
