Torque on floating hand guard mount?
« on: June 09, 2013, 04:30:34 AM »
I bought a DPMS free floating hand guard, to put on my DPMS rifle. The wrench I bought doesn't have a cutout for my torque wrench so I torqued it as tight as I could by hand. I lined up the hole for the gas tube. I can mill my wrench for the 1/2 inch square on my torque wrench but am having a hard time wrapping my head around why I have to torque to 35 foot pounds. The hand guard is made of alum, probably 6061, so it can be bent or broken. Should I mill the wrench and torque to 35-40 lbs. or would I be good. I did put some anti-seize on the threads.I didn't want to put locktight on the threads, as I may remove it some day. I hand tightened fairy tight. I would think if I went one more notch to line up the gas tube,I would be taking a chance of bending or breaking the mount. Thanks, Don
