35 Rem Handi............

For those who have a 35 Rem Handi, factory barrel, not rechamber. How has the accuracy been, any misfire issues as I've seen reported with some T/C Contender barrels ? I have a large supply of Hornady 180 SSP bullets to use if I purchase one of these. Good choice ?

If those are the 180 SSP pistol bullets I know they work good in a Maxi.  I always thought them too fragile for the 35 Remington, which supposedly likes 200gr better than 180gr. 

Maxi folks would probably trade 200gr for your 180 SSPs.  I'd do that if I didn't have a Maxi.  JMHO...

I've shot the 180gr SSP in my 35 Rem(rechambered 357 Maxi) using Super 35 Rem loads, they'd be fine for deer if heavy bone is avoided in SAAMI loads, the 180gr Speer would be a better bullet for either tho, there's virtually no difference in BC,  .245 for the Speer vs .248 for the Hornady!

I bought mine for the Mississippi "Primitive" Weapons season last year.  Out of the first ten tries I had 7 FTFs.  I contacted Brian and sent it to him in October, three weeks before the season started.  He fixed it and had it back before the season began.  I harvested several does with it along with a 18 1/4" 8 point at 260 yards.  I have had no problems  of any kind since getting it back.

I have only shot factory ammo so far but the accuracy with the Hornady Evolution ammo has been about 1" at 100 yds in mine, and a real pleasure to shoot.  In 2014, Mississippi is doing away with the Primitive weapons requirements and I won't have to use it but I probably will anyway.

For a long time I thought I wanted a .35 Rem.  I was with a buddy hunting in Maine years ago when he took a nice doe with a Marlin and I was impressed.  Today, my wife and I have 3 Maxis and I have a Handi .356/.358.  I can do everything and more with them and no longer have a desire or need for a .35.  My high end Maxis and low end .356s live in .35 Remingtonville.  I have a lot of respect for the old caliber as I do for all the oldies.  It's just not something I need........at the moment ??? ??? ??? ???   Oh crap...is that itch coming back :o :o :o

Thanks for your post jrabbit, it reminds me to get off my lazy hind end and get my 35 Rem sent in for Brian to work on for the FTF problem.  Glad to hear he got it fixed.  260 yds with a 35 Rem is some fine shooting and shows the ole cartridge has plenty of oomph.  What round were you shooting, maybe the Leverevolution??   I too figure that even after the PW season ends I will still shoot mine for grins and giggles if the accuracy is there after the repair job.  Actually shot two deer at short range with it this past season but was nervous at every trigger pull which were really trigger jerks since that was what I found necessary to get around the ftf/light primer strikes.

I was shooting the Lever Evolution (200 grn I think).  I was as surprised as the deer and it didn't take a step.  I have also shot the Remington factory loads but they don't shoot as well in my rifle with groups off the bench at 2-21/2".  I had FTF with both brands before I sent it to Brian, but none since.  I had planned to load for it, but the Hornady loads shoot about as well as I'm capable.

I use the 35 Super data in my 35 Rem. I initially went with the 200 grain Hornady Leverevolution bullet. I found the 180 grain Speer to be a bit tougher bullet and better suited for the velocities I am getting. A good hard cast flat point lead bullet at a modest velocity would be a deer and hog getter also. If Barnes made a 180 grain TSX FP for the 35 Rem like the 150 grain FP they make for the 30-30, that would be my choice. That bullet is amazing out of the 30-30.

I had one for one season. Absolutely loved it! Sold it in favor of a 358 winchester Encore, which i sold after one season as well.  Wish i had just rechambered the ol remington to that or 356. I miss that ol rifle. Took about 5 deer that season. Bang flop.
Not one ftf. Shot 200 gr factory remington ammo. 1-1.25" groups at 100 all day long.

I don't have a 35 rem in a Handi, but I do have a model 14 remington pump.  A few years back took a black bear one shot (head) he didn't move, just dropped.  Used 180 gr rem soft point.  Outfitter thought it was impressive.  Got a used 500 smith Handi for this years trip.  Will post compared results.

FWIW, I believe, and it is entirely just my opinion, that the FTF or light-strikes are due to the time of production when H&R had the flaky Transfer Bar issues, not due to the cartridge.

I was thinking it was improperly chambered barrels from a certain time period. Didn't realize it was transfer bar issues.

I love mine... it's my favorite rifle. Zero recoil and super deadly with 200 grain Core-Lokts,,, mine shoot's around 1.5 moa with no FTF problems.
