I am considering buying a Bore Sighter to help set up and check my scopes. Opinions appreciated on the Bore Sighter's or the newer Laser light in the bore. Thomtender

some people find them helpful. I never had one do much more than get on paper 100 yards. I like to place the rifle in a vice or bags and if possible remove the bolt and sight through it and line up the scope left to right then up and down , a plumb straight edge is good like a door frame , then shoot at 25 yards adjust to hit center l-r and 2.5 inches high . shoot at what ever range you like and be set. I have seen severl gun smiths do it this way and they have the collimators and don't use them.

I have one and use it to get close before heading to the range after mounting a scope. In my experience it's not accurate enough to use to check a scope after it's zeroed. Also for me I need to use it at around 100 yards to be close to a shooting zero after mounting a scope. Twice it has been way off for some reason?

I do what SHOOTALL does, and don't use my bore sight any longer. Shoot one at 25, adjust, then I am on the paper at 100; granted its a nice size piece of paper.

Ill take the other side. Id bet that the ammo ive saved being on paper at a 100 yards has paid for my boresighter a couple times. I buy alot of new guns and do alot of scope swapping. I prefer my lazer unit over my scope style but just because the arbors on the simmons scope style one i have fit the bore pourly.

On a bolt action I use the looking thought the bore system. I cut a heavy cardboard box with two V cuts to rest my rifle in. Take out the bolt, and looking through the bore I line it up on a object about 100-150 yards away then center the target in the cross hairs. Your on paper if your careful.

Lloyd, what's the difference in using a bore sighter & the way Shootall, and a couple others are doing it. It's both bore sighting is it not?

how do you save any more ammo than we do?

I have one...a bushnell. Had it for years. I use it for bolt guns....I set the cross hairs on the 1st block below the center grid lines and then shoot at 25 yards to tweek the W and E. If I set the crosshairs right on the center grid lines, the group is 4"++ inches high at 100 yards.....learned this after I read the directions. It's just to get the 1st shot where I can see it....nothing more.

Yeah Doug I believe that's all there capable of. Then you must as you said fine tune the adjustment to zero.
I just had too many scopes mounted & bore sighted that was no where near the paper by gunsmiths & gunships so I started doing it myself. Just like oil changes. I marked my oil filters to see if they really changed it and in at least 50% of the time they didn't. So I do my own now.

Too bad people's work ethic is so poor these days.

I don't think its work ethic with regard to bore sighting a scope in a gun shop. I think its folks who think they are experts just because they work there. Some of them don't know how much they don't know.

I've had a Cabela's laser bore sighter for many years, it does what it's supposed to, gets me on paper, works fine for me, the switch was kinda flaky, but easily fixed by increasing spring tension on the batteries to solve the problems mentioned in the reviews. I have heard guys say they were mad at this place or that because they bore sighted their rifle for them but it was off and they missed a deer.

I have this old leupold magnetic that gets me on paper. The best thing I found was a paper computer that tell me how may clicks to move to zero. It eliminates a bunch of shots. they also have an app that you can get for a smart phone.

I use the bushnell boresighter and it has saved me a lot of time and aggravation over the years. I've swapped scopes and it only takes a couple of minutes and it is always on paper. I cut a piece off of a roll of butcher paper so it's a big target

There are other ways but this seems like a simple solution before heading to the range with a new scope/rifle combo.

yep that works well with a grid target on top of that. I keep a roll just for that.
you can't adjust if you cant see a hole

it can be done if a guy has nothing but bolt guns but its pretty tough to do on a lever action or semi auto. Ive done the look through the bore many many times myself and it works. Ive found though that once you get used to your specific bore sighter you can usually come closer the bore sighting by eye. Like i said there not for everyone. If i only had a couple guns or only bought a gun ever few years i probably wouldnt bother with one either.

About 20 years ago I bought a TC Pro Hunter and installed a Leupold scope. The dealer had a laser bore sighter and aligned my scope and ring windage to a spot across the store near the ceiling that was calculated to be on target a some known range.
I went straight to my local range and the pistol would not print on a 3 ft piece of cardboard at 25 yds. I suppose a bore sighter is no better than its user, and mine didn't know what he was doing.

I have got on paper with lever action and semi autos by shooting a paper 25 yards away. then adjusted to get on . I center the scopes adjustment R-L then mount it on the rifle. Center the bases if adj. . If you are way off at 25 yards it may indicate another problem. U-D adjustment is also centered but when L-R is good then U-D is set 2 inches high for most rifles.

mine had a learning curve you cant just stick in on and go. the lazer unit i have has to be indexed with a mark i made on it lined up with the center of the top of the barrel. If its not you might as well not even do it. My other one is a scope style which i actually like better. Its pretty much dead on most times. Id bet the most its been off at a 100 yards is 6 inches.
