A very good Thursday

The man in the brown truck brought my .17 Hornet home to me today and it looks great.  To make it an even better day Midway had .17 Hornet ammo back in stock. 

I got a notification that they had .17 brass but when it got to checking it out, it was already all gone.  So I looked into ammo and they had the 20 grain factory rounds in stock.  I could only afford 3 of the 5 box limit today but that's OK for now.

I suppose I shouldn't be upset that the varmint forearm I wanted just went out of stock.  Good things come to he who waits...

Congrats, hope she's a shooter for you.  ;)  Things seem to be improving on finding components for most stuff, so shouldn't be long to find what you are needing.  ;)

That calls for at least a mini-celebration.  We could call today "17 Hornet Day" here on the forum.  In fact we ought to create a whole bunch of Handi Holidays.  It'd give us lots of time off to shoot :o ::) 8)   Hey, maybe we could even get PAID holidays.

I almost forgot.....my driver of the Brown Truck of Happiness is a very pretty young lady.  It gives an old coot even more reason to look for a delivery 8)

I like the idea of a gun holiday but I wouldn't go that far. Perhaps ever second Thursday in June should be .17 Hornet day. 

What's even better is I'm picking up my twin grandsons on Friday and I have the .17 with us when we go shooting.  Now I have to find where I put that DNZ scope mount.  It's going to get the scope I took off my .223 barrel when I traded it for the .25-06.  This Tasco 6-18x should be a good match for it...

Sorry I got busy yesterday, But I wish you all a belated Happy Hornet Day,  Now is this only a 17 Hornet day or do all Hornets Qual?

I'm self employed so I have to work or no money...  Things have been a bit slow this year so I don't have the gun funds that I would normally have by this time of year. 

On the other hand I'm still living in a state of disarray since my move last November.  In theory that should give me more time to get organized but that's not going so well...

I had not kept up with the sub calibers and the 17 Hornet stormed onto the scene and me, who started on the 22 Hornet, was none the wiser.


Did Hornady use the standard 17 Ackley Hornet spec'd case of .011" taper, 30º shoulder that starts 1.109" from base, and 0.225" neck length, or did they mess with it?

They messed with it - the reason given was to allow it to work in standard existing 22 Hornet actions and magazines with the longer profile Vmax bullets, but there is always the old legal liability reasons in today's world.  I have two - neither a Handi (yet - I hope to build one someday) - one is a CZ 527 Varmint and the other a Savage 25.  Both excellent shooters with factory ammo - I have yet to try reloading. Have read that it is very difficult if not impossible to match the ballistics of factory due to the proprietary powder used, but plan on trying AA1680 and Lil' Gun.

I don't care if I don't get as good ballistics as factory ammo.  If I can reload to better than .17 rim fire specs for the same or less money, that's what I'll do.  I expect to get a lot of rounds out of a pound of powder...

BTW, if I really wanted a fast .17, I would have gone for the .17 Mark lV...
