OK I will try this again. I was at Sportmans Warehouse this weekend blowing the rest of my b-day gift certificate :grin: and looked at a brand new 17hmr with the synthetic stock. They had a price tag of $139. Is this good? I am looking at getting my second handi and I am leaning towards a 22lr but have not had a chance to look at any. Anyway what do you guys think, is that a good price?

That's sounds about normal , once in a while I see one for $135.

Have you looked at the Ultra Varmint 22 Mags? They run about $149. ~~ SV

Thanks SV. I have seen the pictures of the 22 mags but I think I am leaning more to the 22lr with some subsonic rounds for close to town shooting. Has anyone tried out the subsonic rounds. Yes they will still make a pop but can you tell the differance between them and others?

I've tried two subsonic loads in my sportster, the cci cb short shot horrible. 3 to 4 inch groups at 20 yards. Very quiet, a little pop, 727 fps, but couldn't hit anything beyond 10 yards... The other subsonic I tried was remingtons "high velocity" 1095 fps. They were a wee bit louder than the cb's but were 1 holers at 20 yards. I've gone out and shot them three times and all three times were ragged holes. The last time was shooting apples, walnuts, acorns, etc. Extremely accurate, I couldn't, and still can't, believe how good they shot.

But, like I mentioned, they're a little bit louder than the cb's, but still not the crack of a LR.

Oh, if you ask sportsmans they can probably order you a sportster 22lr, should be around $103-$110 I would guess. Then you can send it away, spend $63 for the 17hmr varmint barrel, and have the 22 for quiet work, small game, and cheap plinking, and have the 17hmr for crows and stuff, all for around $170 + shipping to nef.

Hey Scruffy, do you mean the Remington High Velocity rounds or the remington subsonic rounds and what exactly is the CCI cb found. I just assumed it was like a 22 short. :?:

Ok we'll start with the cci's. The cci cb's come in two sizes, the cb short, part number 0026, and the cb long, part number 0038. Both are identical except for the case (short vs long rifle). CCI also makes other shorts, but not as slow and quiet as the CB. And all of CCI's shorts are subsonic (under 1260fps, or close to that, I have another headache, can't remember for sure...) I can't remember where I got my cb's, I think at walmart.

The Remingtons I shot were the "high velocity" shorts. The high velocity shorts are a 29 grain solid lead bullet pushed at 1095fps. The Remington "subsonic" are a 22 long rifle with a 38 grain hp travelling at 1050fps.

If you want to get technical, any round under 1260fps is "subsonic". So pretty much all your match stuff is subsonic also. Remingtons match stuff 40 grain bullet and have a muzzle velocity of 1085fps and also have a "lead round nose" bullet.

I like the "high velociy" shorts because they're the flattest shooting of the bunch. But if you wanted a little more smack than the 29grain bullet can provide moving up to the 38 grain "subsonic" lr, remingtons "target" round (40 grain bullet at 1150fps), or the "match" stuff with their 40 grain bullet.

Sportsmans has all of the loads I've mentioned. I get the 22 high velocity shorts from walmart.

I want to buy the Ultra Varmint 22 Mag and then send the receiver, forearm and stock in to H&R for the 17HMR barrel. That way I would have two cool small caliber guns with laminated stocks for a little over $200.00...Sweet

I think I paid the exact same price for my Sportster in .17HMR. In all honesty I bought the little rifle because it was the only .17HMR I could find(they were new at the time and I was horney to have one ). Being a long time TC Contender shooter, I got home with this "thing", looked at it and said to myself "I can't believe I actually bought that." In short, I change my opinion in a hurry. Haven't ordered the 22lr barrel, but intend to shortly.
I've shot a pile of Rem Subsonics, and find them more accurate than any of the shorts or cb's. They are pure death on squirrls. Of course that 's out of a Contender, but I'd sure give'm a try.

Hey Hopalong 7 I am in the same boat I have a T/C contdender carbine and a handy rifle both shoot great but the handy aint so easy on the eyes!

I just received my .22 LR & .17 HMR barrels back from NEF...I plan on using the .22 LR often in just the way you intend to use yours.
I have put an old Simmons 2.5X 20 shotgun scope on the long rifle, since it's nice and compact and should be plenty rugged. The scope is only 7.5" in length, and the long eye relief places the rear of the scope just about 1 3/8" behind the rear of the chamber.
I will be trying various low speed rounds, including the Aguila SSS.
I have used Rem subsonics in some of my other rifles...although I am not normally a fan of Rem .22 LRs, i find no fault with those subsonics.
Yes, they are louder than CBs...but they are a lot more power.
I will be taking it soon to my woods where I have a range set up.
