Older Barrel Lug Style?

I recall a forum member posting that some older barrel profiles (and/or perhaps finish) was better looking than that from H&R 1871 in more recent times.  Also, I have seen separate pictures of both barrels and forearm wood which show some sort of mechanical hooking arrangement, instead of a tapped stud/lug and a fine-thread forearm screw fasteners.  Is there any compatability between the older barrels and the modern actions and fore-end wood?

Snap-on forends were on vintage H&R Inc firearms prior to sometime in the mid 70's IIRC, screw on forend studs started with a ¼"-28 thread and later were ¼-20 as are modern studs. I have a model 158 30-30 barrel  that's ¼"-28, my 1940 model 1908 12ga has a snap-on forend.
