357Mag Mannlicher Carbine Project
« on: June 16, 2013, 08:29:47 AM »
I have been wanting a .357 caliber Handi for some years and none have appeared around here. Spanky and I came to trade terms on his (dare I say it?) brand 'spankin' new 357Mag barrel and I spend a lot of yesterday fitting it to my SB-2 Case Colored frame.
The rimcut was deeper than I like, so I addressed the 'too long' fit first by filing the breech end to get a min. seat for various brands of brass rims, then some underlug pivot sanding to get alum. foil headspace and lockup. This is a slow and laborious 'spot', file, & try, but results in all aspects being spot on.
I wanted open or peep sights, at least for quick trials now, and this is the current late barrel sans sights, so on went the WGRS and a quick & dirty taped on factory front blade.
My original intent was to finish it up with the CR-Carbine wood, but........I always had wanted the old 'Mannlicher' carbine and have the proper bits, so.......
Picture this:
22" heavy barrel 357 Mag. c/w peep sight and front ramp/blade
PW PG buttstock, low comb (I will swap to high comb when I scope it)
Mannlicher forestock (early(?) factory model w/o the plastip tip)
So, really, it looks just like any other factory H&R 'Mannlicher' but in the never factory offered 357Mag (BTW, dont confuse mine here with the pics Hoyt posted down a bit of his) and a rear peep rather than the open mid-barrel sight. My old grocery scale says it goes 7# so it is no lightweight, but it hangs and swings well for offhand shots (funny that the Rossi '92' carbines and Win. Trapper's only go a bit over 6# as repeater leverguns).

Father's Day Shoot report:
This chamber can take my 170gr. cast SWC seated WAY out in 357Mag cases. 357Max cases are shy of seating by .240ish (Thanx Quick for sending some test sticks).
In 357Mag cases, std. sml. psl. primers and 6.0gr. weighed of TrailBoss (100% load under the bullet base) it hits right where its lookin' out to 50yd. (my home range limit) with twack and smack.
All in all, a good result and a happy day  ;D

Hey Crank... Great idea! Just finished it... walnut stock set with cocobolo tip and grip cap... high comb buttstock patterned after the GSI, but slimmed down... I have it in a scoped version in .357 Max and a NDS-38 peep version in .44 Mag... I am just finishing the straight stock walnut/East India rosewood mannlicher low comb set for the .44... I am finishing up a thumbhole maple mannlicher in a grey stain for a .35 Whelen chopped to 20", and this morning I installed the Jacaranda/Cocobolo semi-mannlicher (2" from barrel end) forearms on my .30/30 & 7.63X39 set (I'll get some pics up of them soon);

Hoyt, you were one of the reasons I went this way, your workmanship and pics are inspiring.
After messing about some I will scope mine up and see what the real potential is, but right now its ready for coon or 'chuckin'. I just knocked down some steel critters at 50yd. (about smallish 'coon size) with that load I posted and it has authority without being obnoxious.
I keep thinking about that Nodak sight and 'fire sight' like yours too. About how far up in elevation adjustment are you with that height front and for what load/distance?

Hoyt, where did you get the NDS supplies?

When I emailed them a few months ago, they said they won't deal with Canadians

Yeah, you can't trust those Canuck's... They are a shifty lot... A buddy came up last fall to fish walleye and do some waterfowling, and the parts were in his "tickle trunk..." Got lucky I guess.

Nope... No checkering for me... I don't like what it does to the wood grain and to be honest, I don't really like the feel either... A nice buffed satin finish gives me all the grip I need. My new straight grip walnut/rosewood mannlicher sets have much more wood at the tip; about 2:1 walnut/rosewood and the joint was done at 45 degrees for more surface contact. When I was doing the forearm with the straight cut lamination I dropped it off my work bench on the tile floor and snapped off the tip and had to start all over again. These three new sets look really nice... They are going on my son's and my .44 Mags and a .22LR/.22 WMR swap barrel set that has Skinner peeps. I really like the way the Jacaranda/Cocoblo forearms look on the .30/30 & 7.62, and will post pics asap.

Tonight when I was taking the pictures, I managed to drop my 7.62 off the deck railing, seven feet straight down, landed on the end of the barrel on a wooden step bounced 180 degrees and landed right on the end of the scope three steps down did one more 90 degree bounce and landed at the bottom flat out upside down on the scope... it is a good thing the kids weren't around... the sky turned a few shades bluer!!! Turns out, no damage done (I don't think... haven't shot it yet)... Mueller makes a tough scope and those Z2 rings are indestructible!

All mine just shoot, when I have time.
I haven't taught them any acrobatics yet ;D

BTW That's some fine work you put into them, wish I could do that.
Would be pretty time consuming if I tried it, prolly never get done.

+1

I find checkering really takes away from the beauty of the wood.  And the grip is not an issue.  Most military guns I've shot has no checkering....

and when I wear my deerskin gloves, it is like I rosin'd my hands.

My smith called to say that my .35 Whelen Improved barrel is on it's way, along with my Hornet barrel reamed to .22 BR Remington... I will fit the grey mannlicher stock set and post some picks here shortly... The .22 BR will take a little longer because I still have to make the bench forearm.

is that a stubbed barrel? or an IMP/IMP Whelen?

I got my 22KHornet reamer in recently, and have some interesting ones coming from down south in the next month.

should be interesting.

The only stubbed gun I have is my .260 Rem... This Whelen is an improved factory, which as you suggest is really and imp/imp. It was threaded and braked... It is going to be my dedicated moose fire-pole. The BR bench rig is a rechambered Hornet... I'm mounting a Boyd's Sterling thumbhole finished in textured black and making a bench style forearm in textured black also... Will likely be a paper puncher, but should do a nice job on yotes if I take a hankering.
