6.5 Wet Pack test
« on: June 16, 2013, 09:08:00 AM »
I had some time on my hands and thought I would test 140gr Nosler Partition and 129gr Hornady Interbond bullets by shooting them into a wet pack that I made with some old telephone directories. On all these pictures the NP is on top and the IB at the bottom. On the first picture, which is also the first book you can see the IB opened much quicker than the NP. In picture 2 which is book number 3 you can see the NP is now just as big as the IB.  In the 3rd picture which is book number 5 the NP is in its trademark mushroom while the IB still made a bigger whole. The IB ended on 82% of its original weight and the NP made 76%. The IB paid for the bigger mushroom by penetrating 32cm while the NP penetrated 42cm.
The NP was @ 2760fps and the IB was @ 2910fps.

are yu shooting a 6.5x55? if so could you also test another common caliber say 06 or 270 at the same time for comparison against the 6.5? im interested because ive yet to recover a 6.5x55 bullet from a deer. i have recovered several 06 bullets tho.mostly on quartering shots which ive not had the oppurtunity to take yet with the 6.5.i usually avoid them if possible. the difference in penatration between a 6.5 140 grn bullet and a 30 cal 150 grn bullet would be very interesting. the 156grn oryx is a heavy for caliber bullet and would be interested in what it does.

Hi . Yes it is a 6.5x55 - but a CZ550 so I can get a bit more speed than with the older
rifles.

I only have a 300WM but I think it is not a bad idea to shoot it into the pack to see what
it does. I have 165GMX which will give the 130gr TSX out of the 6.5 a run for its money!!

I haven't used the IB for hunting yet but some guys I know used them with very good
results. I will let you know as soon as I shoot something with them. I used the 156gr
Oryx (also bonded like the IB) and I still have to recover one. That kudu was about
500 pounds and the bullet didn't even stop to think about passing through.

Thanks for sharing the test, good stuff!!
I have heard good things about the Oryx, esp. on big animals.
The 140 NP is now all I load for my Wife's 6.5x55, it plowed through the shoulders of her Cow Elk & yet because the front part is soft it expands on Whitetails, just a great bullet.

one thing some fail to take into account with a partition is that they not only penetrated deaper even after shedding that weight but that shedded weight is pieces of lead that shred the inside of an animal. Some of the largest wound channels ive saw on live game and quickest kills have come with partitions.
