Model 12 Question
« on: June 23, 2013, 01:56:37 AM »
I bought a Winchester Model 12 for $100.00.  It was made in 1918 (short chamber) and looks pretty tired.  It's missing the Cartridge Cut Off, Ejector, and pin/spring that locks the magazine tube.  The barrel has been cut to about 24" and it has a slight bulge about 1" from the muzzle.  I'd like to get it working but I think I'm going to be in too deep when I get it finished.  I'd be willing to sink $200.00 into it but I don't know if it would shoot even if I had the parts.  My original thought was to make it into a Police/Prison Guard type gun with a 20" barrel.  Should I just part it out?

Yeah I believe that's your best option Swampy, there not bringing the big bucks they did a few years ago. And it would need to be a nice one to get $400 I believe. With a cut barrel & missing parts I don't think you could make anything on it.

I agree with pastorp.  Going price around here is in the $350 - $400 range for a decent shooter grade Model 12.  About a year ago I bought a 1937 16 gauge for $350 that only had the normal bluing wear and needed a good cleaning.

BTW, is this a 16 or 20 ga?  No model 12's were built in 12 ga with chambers shorter than 2 3/4".  If you measure the chamber with a chamber length gauge (with the barrel off) I believe you have to add the thickness of the headspacing ring inside of the receiver to get a true reading.

Part it out.  It'll never be worth collecting and you'll spend more working on it than it will cost to buy what you really want.

I love model 12s, but sometimes you've got to let them go gracefully...
