Help me trap some coons in the attic
« on: June 24, 2013, 05:15:19 AM »
We have coons in the attic here in central Texas. At first we thought they were squirrels until we put a security camera upstairs. Then I looked at the captain and said, "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

So far, they have laughed at the peanut butter, mangoes, and other non-meat products I've put in the trap. Was going to try canned cat food next, unless someone has a better suggestion.

I usually give them a choice--Blackies fur king(sweet bait or Blackies fatal attraction--shellfish bait.
You can also try the sweet lures, like sledge hammer.

Marshmellows, canned tuna and smoked fish work in my Havahart, the marshmellows don't appeal to cats.....yet.  8)

I use the cheapest sardines money can buy, and wear gloves when I bait the live trap.

Or cat food CHEAP also  ;D  I lay a tarp over the trap so the entrance and rear are open and they can see thru. but not thru. the sides.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Simple fix is to set up a dvd or some other musical source with some hard metal rock music at very high volume going full blast where they stay during daylight hours and in a couple of days no raccoons!! They sleep during the day, so they get deprived of their sleep and leave for quieter surrounding`s!

When they are gone foraging during the night plug their entry way so they can't get back into the attic.

I had a customer with this problem. They refused to go in a have a heart trap for me too.

SO I used tuna fish to lure them out of the attic at dusk and sealed the hole with a piece of plywood. They got in the vent at the peak of the house.

The next day they PULLED THE PLYWOOD OFF!!! I SCREWED it to the house!!! WOW!!  SO I took a 4foot square piece of heavy fence wire with a 1x2 hole and waited a couple days and did the same thing... lured them out of the house with the tuna and screwed the wire to the house... LOTS of screws.

The next AM I went there and ''eliminated'' two big coons as they tried to re enter the attic.  ::) :D ;D

CLEANING there mess was another story!!  VERY BAD!!!

Looks like your cage might be a little tight for that fat boy. May need some prompting to want to squeeze into it. I like marshmellows as well because it's cheap bait, works good, lasts a long time and is weather resistent. But you might try a honey bun. Throw some pieces outside the cage and have a good hunk inside. Honeybuns are like raccoon crack. I've had bigger ones squeeze into smaller traps. Poor felllars looked like a fat lady in tight fishnet stockings.

You might be able to use that camera to see where they are coming in and secure it off.

Another way is to set body grippers where they are entering and exiting.
 This is a permanent--solution.
