Found an orphan today. . .
« on: June 28, 2013, 04:25:14 PM »
. . .at the local pawn shop.  25-06 ejector, NK serial #, cinnamon laminate stock, has a Simmons (Chinese) 3-9x40 and angle lock rings.  Price on it is $250 but, dealer said he'd make that the "out the door" price.  It has light rust all over the outside that's been oiled down to cover up.  Couldn't tell if the bore had rust spots or just dirty. (No cleaning rod available)

I always thought I wanted a 25-06.  Figured it would be a death ray on whitetails.  Do you think I messed up leaving it there?

EDIT:  just so nobody is mislead, taxes here are 9.75% and background check is $10.  That means $250 out the door makes the price around $218.

Death ray for sure on bambi.  The 25-06 is a flat shooting cartridge, with plenty of oomph to work magic on the biggest whitetails out there.   I love mine for sure.

Sounds a bit high to me considering its age(pre-2k frame) and condition, the Chinese Simmons isn't a plus IMO unless it's the latest generation, the good older Simmons scopes were made in the Philippines, I'd offer him $175 and see if he bites.

I'd offer $150 after you take a cleaning rod to the bore.  I would pass on it if the bore is pitted...  Anyway if the bore is OK you can haggle from there.  Remind him of the cost of sending it to H&R to be blued...

I think $275 is a little high, but a new plain Jane one costs $300 + $21 tax around here. Cinnamon Lams will cost around anther $80 or so. We are talking $400 if you can find a new one. I think a new Ultra would be more than $400 more like $450 out the door with out any scope or rings. Face it, the Handi rifle is not the cheapest rifle on the block any more.

Please see my edit on the first post. . .

I could see paying that for a new gun, or even if this gun was mint, as ejector barrels and cinnamon laminate stocks bring a premium.  But the condition and the fact that it cannot be sent in for another barrel hurts it in my book.  In all honesty, the bore was probably fine just dirty.  I can't believe someone would be trying to sell a dirty gun.  I have bought a 870 Express from this shop before.  The outside looked good but a lot of oil.  An Express is not supposed to "shine".  I went ahead and bought it as it functions fine.  Got it home and tore it down and found a bunch of rust in the magazine tube and action was nasty.  That's why I am a little more skeptical when dealing with this guy.

BW I don't think I'd even make him an offer unless it was cleaned up based on your comments.

Yeah I agree with ya Cudatruck, he didn't seem to want to budge on it and as much as I like Handi's it just wasn't quite worth what he was asking.
