Remove shotgun barrel dent
« on: June 30, 2013, 03:21:53 AM »
Winchester model 50. Near perfect condition with the exception of a very small dent right at the muzzel. It is easy to miss the dent doing a visual inspection. However, you can feel the the crwon is out of round by running you finger round the inside of the barrel. I discovered the issue while cleaning the firearm. What is the best way to "pop" the dent and put the crown back in perfect circle? This dent is very small but it is there, more of a ding really...

I bought one with a dent and used a plumb bob and a hammer to get it back right. Just knocked it a little at a time as not to turn it into a blunderbuss.

I had a dent in my duck gun. I made my own version on a dent remover, there is such a tool, and got it a lot better but there was a little left. I shot some patterns and it seemed to shoot as well as it ever had.  So I just hunted with it. They say that using steel shot will peen your choke so I was thinking that over time maybe it would peen out the remainder of my dent. I never saw that it got any better, but we moved a year or two later and I haven't hunted ducks since.

Be cautious as most chokes are swaged into the end of the barrel so drive that plum bob too deeply and you may alter the choke to some degree. The choke creates difficulties but gentle peening with a swage will bring it back to round.. Also please note that if the ding is so small it may not cause any problems..
