Has anyone tried to do a cold temper job on a Handie barrel?
That should relieve the stress risers nicely.

It was a big fad a few years ago. It does have some effect, I consider it to be minimal.

Some folks on a knife forum did a test. They treated some knives and did the rockwell test on em. Sent them off for cryo then tested again and got the same numbers.

lot of controversy about cryo-treatment.
benelli does it to the barrels of their
newer guns. i don't think i'd spend the extra money
to have it done to any of my barrels or
blades. mine do ok now.

I put a barrel in the fridge for a week, shot the same when it came out. $:-\$ Then I took a couple cold ones out of the fridge to relieve my stress.

The group size was still the same but it did not bother me nearly as much. In fact, it lead me to the discovery that if you use MUCH larger bullets the groups look much smaller. I found that an 1.5 " group with a 17 cal really sucks, but with a 50 cal it looks pretty good. I sold my 17 and bought a 500 S&W. My stress levels are way down

Very seriously, I often wonder about the powders I'm using and temperature extremes on the low end. I try to do my sighting in and load work in the Spring or Fall with temps between 40 and 60 or so. I surely ain't shooting today.....about 8 below...it's hell when your finger sticks to the trigger

must be nice to be that warm. -15 here with 10 mile a hour winds. Last week, temps were -25 with wind chills at minus -50....

San Angelo Texas was a balmy 85 degrees yesterday,no wind, clear blue skies Set a new record and was the high for the nation!Only supposed to get to mid 70's today though

My fingers once froze to my trigger when it was cold. I stopped warming them in my mouth (sucking on them) and it never happened again.

Pete - there is something to be said about powder ignition at our mid winter temps... For the boys .223 we bought a special powder that was supposed to be much more even tempered since he had planned to coyote and fox hunt in the coldest times. (IMR 8208 xbr) But otherwise I just use the old reliable powders and I dont usually hunt in extreme cold. thejanitor

well temps right now are a lovely -18 with windchills of -35. So lets talk about cold, so far this year coldest is -28 with a wind chills temp of -50 to -60. Here the digital thermometers quiet working at -38 (actual temp) at those temps our face masks actually start to ice up and frost over. You will start to develope frost bite in 15 minutes on any exposed skin at those temps.... coldest temps remembered is -55 (actual) temp with wind chills hitting -80. My car froze and had to be towed to a indoor shop to defrost during this time.....

Well I will quit bragging on warm weather it is nasty even compared to the frozen north standards. Ice pellets and snow! Plus I get to drive 235 miles in it today................. What fun!

Ive seen some terrible prices for cryo, I have a guy here that gets it done by the pound in the batch with industrial stuff and pretty cheap so anybody charging a lot is laughing all the way to the bank.
On the muzzleloader barrels we have done it 'seems' to make 'em slicker; ie, they dont seem to hold onto the fouling so bad and Paul did some group testing with one of his before and after and said it was better. Sure is hard to be more than subjective about all that, though.......Im still the weakest link in the accuracy chain.

We've had some below 0 wind chills here this year, and I can tell you it didn't affect my Handi's that much. I looked in the safe once, and there they were, all snug and warm.

It did affect me a little though. I noticed my body parts began to feel funny and stiff and even painful after just a few minutes.

Conclusion, I need to climb in the safe with the Handi's and wait for a thaw....like today.

I hate to post a reply directly applying to the topic but the cyro can be applied by putting the barrel in a metal pipe capped on one end,stand the pipe on end and then filling the pipe with liquid nitrogen and loosely screwing the other cap back on.We use this little trick to shrink liners and valve seats at the machine shop. It gets colder than an ex-wife's heart very quick

NO idea as to what you will gain other than froze fingers if you are not careful though!

Ya see what braggin' gets ya? There's another nasty one coming in Tuesday or so. It's gonna...thankfully....miss us, go south and get our Ohio guys and go on to clobber the east coast. In the meantime, we're gonna have clear and warmer. It might even make the 20s. I can't knock it. It's about a forty degree improvement.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot the topic...If anyone wants to freeze dry a barrel, just send it up to me and I'll lay it out on the reloading bench overnight.
