Rachel Harris, 22, a second-generation CO newly hired at the Maricopa County  Detention Center, was savagely attacked by Bobby Ruiz as she entered the  convict’s cell at the Lower Buckeye Jail.
 “In the process of the assault, he bit the ear, half the ear off of our  officer…we can’t find half the ear, he may have swallowed it,” Maricopa County  Sheriff Joe Arpaio told the station.

Two inmates, Ricky Shillingford and Andrew Davis, reportedly rushed to  Harris’ aid, wrangled Ruiz off the stricken detention officer and held the  frenzied assailant down until additional officers arrived on the scene.
“He had her in a chokehold,” Shillingford told Fox 10. “I saw blood was  coming from her ears.”
“I seen her on the floor, crunched over, hunched over,” added Davis. “I  snatched him off of her. He took a swing at me and went back toward her….Right  is right and wrong is wrong. We make mistakes to get in here, but, hey, if you  can correct your mistakes, then why not?” 
Ruiz, already convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, now faces  charges of aggravated assault on an officer. He has reportedly been placed on  lockdown, allowed only bread and water.
“I just want to say, ‘thank you,’ to those of you who did help me,” Harris  reportedly told a group of inmates after the fact, her frayed ear wrapped in  gauze. “I really don’t know if I would have come out with anything more if you  guys didn’t help me.”
Harris thanked the inmates with pizza.

Call me a Dinosaur or a male chauvinist, it matters little to me. I see absolutely no reason for female Officers being in a Male Correction facility or their portion if it is for both Men and Women.

  While I don't agree with females guarding male inmates..I also don't agree with inmates attacking a "corrections officer"!
  Of course, stupid PC brought us females guarding males and GUARDS being called "corrections officers"..   
 
  In any case, it looks like a couple inmates may have won them a parole next time their hearings come up..

Nothing wrong with that. Quite often lou city police have a female cop hurt bad trying to do a mans job. POWDERMAN.

I understand some folks' ideas of gender seperation, but today's workforce often necessitates females working in male housing units when male deputies are not available.  I worked with a couple of female deputies that I would rather have as a partner than some of the males I had to work with.  There were several instances where inmates came to the aid of deputies jumped by other inmates.  I had several inmates from different housing units tell me "Sarge, if anything goes down, we got your back."  I tried to treat the inmates with a certain amount of respect.  I was not there to judge them, just "Care, Custody and Control". When they violated the rules, I didn't give excessive lock down time unless they just got ignorant.  However, with all that said, some PC administrators just can't understand there are differences between the physical abilities of male and female officers.   I see a few female officers come in to where I work now that will have to use lethal force because they are so slightly built as well as a few male officers that are fairly small (height and weight).
When you are grappling on the ground with an aggressive person that is a lot bigger and stronger than you, technique and training can only take you so far.  I see the same thing about to happen in the military with females going in to combat arms MOSs.
