Removing a Scoped Barrel...

I am considering a "Store-Arm" for my Handi because it can be removed with no tools. I was wondering, if I remove a barrel with a scope attached...


When I reattach the Scope Barrel and tighten the forend back down... the gun should hypothetically return to zero, correct?
Or does this not work the same as shotguns with a cantilever and other such firearms....

POI can shift on a barrel remount... there are things that you can do to minimize POI shifting... bedding the forearm and either pillar bedding or using a pre-tensioned knob helps considerably... using a fitted dedicated forearm for each barrel is a good idea also. I have dozens of barrels that are swapped onto a dozen frames, POI does not shift at all, or by very much, but I have done all of the work noted above for each barrel... even though I am confident that POI will not move, I still sight-in before hunting with a remounted barrel.

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking about taking it apart to conserve on space and then put it together when I needed it from the truck... Maybe those plans will have to change and I'll rethink my storage idea... Dang It lol


I was going to use a 120 or 80mm ammo-can and make my own case out of it for the back of my truck but a fully assembled rifle won't fit. If I do an 18" cut that is.. 16.5 with youth stock would but that would be almost too small for me to shoot comfortably.

Weld some kind of extension on the end of the can.

I have a padded take-down shotgun case that rides behind the seat with a synthetic youth stocked .223 Superlight in it... It is slim and light and has two internal pockets for ammo sleeves... One has ffull power 68 BTHP loads and the other has 45 SP/TB reduced loads... I have a QD knob attachment that has been tensioned to bottom out in the lug, resulting in a consistent return to the forearm pressure used to sight in... This gun has rear peep and fiber-optic front sights and is probably my most useful rig.

Wow, you don't mess around do ya? lol I thought it would be as easy as purchasing something from Brownell's or Numrich's haha
Maybe I will just venture the "weld on an extension" or different method of transporting it in my truck. I did a "Bubba Job" on my latest Mosin purchase for the muzzle and am MUCH more comfortable with cutting and re-crowning my own barrel so I could probably spend a few extra bucks on the storage method lol

I just use a thumbscrew on my forend and just turn it until it's finger tight.  My .223 shoots .38" groups at 100 yards and my .45-70 shoots .875" groups.  One is irons and one is scoped.  Neither one or any of the other 9 barrels I have fitted to mine change POI with swaps.  Just don't torque that screw too tight.

Makes me a little more reassured with doing it the way I want with the Store-arm. I may even just slap a decent 4x on it and see what happens lol... I have a decent amount of time to decide but trying to ge a list of things I am going to do so I can get things rollin' once I am ready too

i have several  frames that i swap barrels on and have never had any noticable POI change after a swap and I have done nothing special to my forearm screws.   I would be more worried about a scope being bumped and knocked out of alinement.
