A fixer upper model A
« on: January 31, 2014, 03:47:37 AM »
Well I was at the scrap yard getting some metal to make a bed for a car I'm doing for the wife. Saw a promising piece up under a flipped over truck bed. The owner of the yard told me oh yeah that's a model A, forgot where I put it. Asked him how much. He said $46.46.
That's the first time I drove a car home in the bed of a compact truck. Forgot to get metal to make her a bed so I'll have to go back next off day. Well I've bought worse and paid more so I figured this one was a steal.

Thought I had more pictures to post, not real good with a camera. It's got the hood, doors, trunk, cowl and all, just a little assembly required. He said the 46 cents was for the boxes in the attic of the shop, had a lot of the interior trim and everything in them. Need to take one back to him, it was full of 40 ford parts. Need to ask him if that one is hidden somewhere as well. He was just a fella that intended to put one together and let it sit for a long time.

I wish I had the time and money to do that.

I know it looks like it's all rust but everything behind the doors is very badly oxidized red paint. It just didn't come out good with the phone camera. The 2 parts on the lower left are the roof sides above the doors, both those and the doors have surface rust. It looks like they have plenty of meat to media blast when it's paint time. The cowl is black. Couldn't find the lower portion of the cowl.

Assuming it's parts from 2 or 3 cars. Probably one hit from the rear and one wrecked in the front. Since the middle roof and doors don't match the front or back, guessing both were wrinkled there since that's the weakest part of them. A lot of folks don't weld in a piece for the center of the roof so there's just a huge hole covered with vinyl. The only supports from the factory were pieces of the wooden crates that the parts came in. That was fine for a 40 hp motor but folks don't quite use their head to not strengthen them a bit more for an engine with modern power. It's looking like I'll just have to get a radiator shell, fab up some pieces for the lower cowl, make a roof, floor and buy the trim pieces inside the doors.

You'd be surprised of the price to build one Swampy. Most of the parts I use are from the junkyard. The big ticket item is the body at $1000-2000 for a steel one. Beyond that you spend as little or as much as you want. If I can get it to post the pictures they will be of one I gave to my dad last year for father's day. It was just under 7800 to build. Just about every part was scrounged unless it has to do with braking, cooling, lighting, wiring, ignition or the engine (which was pulled from the junkyard as well). Personally I like even a simpler look than he does so my budget is usually 5-6000.

For the time, yeah it takes some. That was about 7 or 8 months but I work a full time job on midnights and have a farm to take care of along with other small side jobs like atv/motorcycle and tractor repair in a small town. Also I knew I had plenty of time so was working on my own projects at the time as well. I really don't watch tv very often so that frees a lot of time up.
