6PPC for the handi

what would you think about having the handi chambered in 6mm PPC ? has anyone tried this ? i was kicking around the house last night and dug out my ancient mid-'80's vintage light varmint benchrest rifle, it has the standard hart barrel, witchita action, can't remember who's trigger (a timmons ) and a fine coat of scratched up fluorescent green and red paint. the 6PPC is a fairly mild round as compared to the new super short magnums, i used to load them to somewhere around  3000 fps with a 68 grain boat tail. the nice thing is that the twist is 1 in 14" which would fit in with NEF's way of making actions for cartridges having less than insane bolt thrusts. i wouldn't mind having a handi chambered in this round and i'll bet it would fair well in the postal match against any other cartridge.

i called the NEF factory, they have no plans to ever make a handi in this caliber, to bad ........

You might want to give a look at rechambering a 22 Hornet to 22 PPC. That would make a very interesting alternative to the 223 and 22-250.

being a rimless case, what would you need to do to get the 22ppc to eject ? a simple reamer wouldn't do the job, would it ?

i ordered a 30-06 barrel for my handi last month, this will be the first rimless cartridge for my handi so i've never seen the rimless case extractor !

my experience was that the 22ppc is a great round with a 52 grain boat tail, it made small 100 and 200 yard groups as long as the wind wasn't blowing.

i think NEF would do good to have customs shop where a few bucks could buy you whatever (reasonable) cartridge you want.

I just sent off an email to a smith that might do this kind of work, at least he used to.  www.egunsmith.com His name is Lee Shaver, excellent work and quality materials.

He won't be cheap but he is good.

hey thanks - i'd really like to have a ppc handi. if he can do it great, maybe he can drill a 22 out to 6mm ??!!??

cheap and good are mutually exclusive !

Actually I think his method is sleeving barrels with match grade sleeves.

I just got my reply fron Lee about re-barreling or sleeving a barrel for the NEF.

Hi Scott,

We do still work on about everthing including handy rifles.

We can basically reline, or rebarrel to any caliber that is in the safe
pressure range  for the action. For some of the higher pressure cartridges
it makes a lot more sence to rebarrel than to reline, just because I don't
like using a thin walled liner for high pressure cartridges.

The cost to reline is usually near $300.00 depending on caliber, and etc.

The cost to put a new barrel on one is more depending on what brand of
barrel you end up using. But the nce thing about rebarrel ing is that you
can use heavier or longer profiles. I even did one in 45-90 for a fella with
a barrel that was 32 inches long, octagon, and the barrel itself weighed
about 6 pounds.

Turn around is usually from a few weeks to two months depending on our work
load.

We can reline to many calibers, but with some of the higher pressure cartridges like the 6ppc it makes more sence to just rebarrel it with a complete barrel. All we have to do is take the lug off of the bottom of the old barrel, and install it on a new one.
 
We can even make the barrel longer, or heavier at the same time.
 
I've never done one in 6PPC, and I don't know what the factory recomendation would be on a cartridge in that presure range.
