20" 20 gauge slug barrel
« on: January 31, 2014, 06:12:23 AM »
Is this too short of a barrel for slug accuracy?  I have never owned a barrel this short and may buy one that I found.  Please let me know your thoughts.

As long as it was cut square and recrowned it shouldn't be any less accurate, just lose a little velocity. I have a factory 22" and it shoots great.

Thanks guys.  I went ahead and bought it and will let you know how it shoots.  I have always wanted a slug gun and my H&R itch kicked up again.  If I remember correctly I can only shoot sabot slugs in a rifled barrel.  Is that correct?

Not true... BUT, probably best accuracy will be a sabot. You will also get some leading from conventional slugs. NOTHING UNSAFE firing a reg slug but yopu will have leading. I usually use reg slugs to get ''on the paper'' then quick clean and shoot for accuracy with the expensive slugs. ;)

I have a 18 1/2" 12ga smoothbore Mosssberg 500 with a post up front and a ghost ring in back that does 5-6"@100yds with Winchester 1oz rifled slugs, and 6-7" at 100 with my handloads, so I don't think barrel length really matters.  Just as long as it is long enough to be legal, who really cares?  Granted, my H&R 20ga USH does better than that, but it also does it with quite a bit more expensive ammo.  So I would expect some very useable accuracy with your short rifled 20ga.  Try it and see.

Speckbelly,

I have a Tracker II 20ga slug gun that I cut to 18.5" and recrowned.  Also d/t for scope rail and it will shoot 3" to 4" groups @ 100 yards with Rem. Buckhammers and a 4x Simmons shotgun scope.   I load my own slugs as well and did a bit of testing and found that 1oz slugs @ 1,650 fps out of a 24" barrel run 1,500 fps out of this 18.5" barrel.  Look at the bright side of having a shorty, what you lose in velocity is more than made up for in muzzle flash and noise. :o ::) ;D
