I know this one is a really tough decision here. Which version of the Handi 45-70 configuration do you like the most. You only get to pick one.   ;D

The shorty ala txpitdog's "the porkchop express".
If you haven't seen it yet... got this link saved in my Favorites, because someday I'm going to have one too but with wooden stock set.

I so love that pork chop Express rifle! I wonder if that thing kicks like three mules. That sure is one sweet little compact rifle.

I prefer the BC for 45/70. If I need short stuff I go with a 500 S&W. The BC is my only rifle without a scope and the fiber optic front sight is still visible. No irons are. The extra 10 inches of barrel allows a lot more room for a flatter pressure curve, increases velocity, changes the muzzle blast, the recoil.

I've got a 45/70 with a 18.25" barrel (about as short as we can go up here) and it handles better than the 22" ones...

shoots good even though it is more micro-rifled than the microgrooves

I too vote for the Shorty.  These are two prime examples of Georges fine work.  18.5 inch Savage 24 Maxi over 20 with chokes, and my Super Handi 16.5 inch .45-70.  I've gotta take a new picture of the .45-70.  She's now got a new, lower mounted scope and sling.

I like my standard Handie. I like shooting a BC but they are too much for carry or I would have one also.

The BC is too long.
Shorties are too short... and loud... and unbalanced.
The standard 22" barrel is just right. ;D

I've got to go standard.  I love my BC, but am switching it to be target only, because it's too heavy to lug around.  lol  The 22" with Truglo Sights suits me perfectly.  ;)

Only have the BC.  When I am some place I can use it,(in a shotgun only state for now :( ) I don't mind the weight.  May be it will be to heavy when I'm older ;D .  Right now I have my 500 Smith if I need a shorter barrel.  Not against the little ones, there is just a few others on the list before I get to a short or standard 45-70.

I prefer my standard 22" barrel.  It balances and handles well even in fairly tight places, and I just like the looks.   I've got a .243 Ultra heavy barrel and it's only 24" and it's a bear to tote around so I can only imagine what a Buffalo Classic would feel like.
Only reason I haven't taken a hacksaw to the rifles I own now is because they all shoot too good, and I'm a skeered I'll mess them up!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Her bark is worse than her bite ::)   To be honest, I can't really see a difference between the 22 inch and the 16.5 with the same load.  I think a lot of people add muzzle blast to felt recoil and say shorties kick worse.  I have not found that to be true, at least as far as I can tell.  The muzzle blast is why I call her "Flamethrower"  I shot it at dusk just to see it :o   I'm shooting 300 gr. Rem. in the shorty and the .405 in the standard, so for me, the shorty kicks less.

I like my 22" standard just fine for everyday use.  I change to the 32" BC for some iron site target work.

Shorties just don't look good to me.

I've thought about ordering another BC barrel and cut it to 27", but just haven't been able to justify it yet.

This is a pic I just got around to taking of the finished 16.5 inch .45-70 Shorty  It's wearing a Bushnell Banner 4x32, Burris medium Zee rings and Allen cartridge holder and sling.  It's on a H&R Camo Lam stock set.

I just turned 50 the 29th of January, and it seems like the .22-250 fluted barrel that I've been carrying around chasing these coyotes in Indiana is a chore; however, I'm going to have a .45-70 Buffalo Classic again in the very near future.

I had a real nice one and sold it to an upstanding GBO member. He offered to let me buy it back a few months ago. I just might have to take him up on it here soon.  ;)

I only have the BC that I built, so it is rather a compromise in the stock department, but I find the TDC walnut stock is a beautiful compromise to the BC stock.  So it is not truly a BC but still has the 32" barrel.  I cannot compare to any other 45-70 but this is a sweet shooting rifle.

I bought it for experimental purposes with black powder, but have yet to shoot any.  I wanted to try some full power smokeless loads but haven't yet. (Which is why it wears a recoil pad.).  Due to this market shortage and my financial shortcomings I have had a hard time collecting all the reloading stuff I need/want.  Therefore I have only shot Leverevoluton loads thus far, as they are the only thing I can find locally.

Also I like the nostalgic feeling of a long barrel and iron sights. I have always wanted one and now that I do it makes me grin like an idiot.:D:D
If I wanted a lighter, shorter hunting package I would have just stuck with my trusty 30-06 Handi that has been with me thru it all.

I know this one is a really tough decision here. Which version of the Handi 45-70 configuration do you like the most. You only get to pick one.   ;D

 Buffalo classic 45-70 Barrel
 Standard 45-70 Barrel
 Shorty 45-70 Barrel

Well I would say that that's gonna depend on my intended uses.

I have a few shorties and over all I like them. BUT IMHO not all calibers make good choices for a shorty. A friend just HAD TO HAVE a M1A shorty. Skimped sold a few guns and saved and bought it... Shot it ONE TRIP TO RANGE and promptly SOLD IT AT A LOSS! The gun felt great, handled and carried much better then full size but WOW did she bark!! Even with double ears it was too loud to enjoy shooting it.

I have a couple real nice and desireable Marlin Marauder lever rifles. I DONT SHOOT THEM for the same reason!!! Simply too loud!

I had a contender in 12&14" barrels in 375 win and 45/70 calibers... I sold them off for different calibers.

SO a shorty 45/70... NOPE not me!

The std model is a great hunter. Still short enough to maneuver in thick stuff yet the muzzle is far enough that reg hearing protection works well. If I wanted a hunter this would be my choice.

The BC is real pretty, it needs a good peep site IMHO but other than that it's about perfect. If your a cowboy action shooter this makes a good choice for the side matches. If you a target shooter this a hoot to ring gongs at some real long ranges.

If I had to have just one... I'll side with vanity. ;) I'll take a BC all day!
