Those who have both, which one? .223 or 22-250?
« on: February 01, 2014, 01:40:37 PM »
I have an Ultra varmint Boyds thunbhole 22-250 but I can get a .223 for $150.  Just wondering if the .223 is a better shooter in the handi models?
Thanks, Jer

Grab the .223 for 150.  You can always get your money out of it.  From the price alone, I'm guessing it's a 1 in 12 twist.  I have a new Superlight 1 in 9.  Comparing the .223 and .22-250 is like comparing apples and oranges....they're both good but different enough to merit having both.  I do and tend to use the .223 inside 300 yards and the -250 beyond.

It's a NEF wood stock.. I haven't looked what years they made those. I was hoping 1 in 9 twist.

Sorry, didn't really answer your question. I have a 22-250 but had some issues with it when I got it. Haven't got back to working on it. My 223 SL has done me good and it's a 1:12 ejector as far as I know. I still have to see on the standard and heavy barrels. Does your 250 shoot good for you?
Depends on what you want to do with them and if you reload.

Any compete rifle for $150 is a good buy!  If you don't like it as said before, you can always get your money back selling the barrel alone!

CW, that's kinda what I was thinking.  I haven't shot it much but I have heard the 223 is a better shooter.  If it's that much better I would gladly put the stock on the 223 and make it my Ultra Varmint!  Well, you know what I mean.
Thanks, Jer

I'd get the .223 for $150.  Availability of ammo would be a definite plus for it too.

I have and use both of them .Out to 300 yards no real difference, beyond that the 22-250 SHINES!

Agree with George, difference is mid range and long range.  But at $150 you can't beat it.  If I find a handi for under $200 it's going home with me, might spend a night in the dog house, but a mans got to do what a mans got to do.

It's funny you guys should mention the dog house.   If I recall correctly, I've spent a few evenings there.  I was smart enough to repent, say I'm sorry, lied and said I'd never buy another Handi, and spend the rest of the night in bed.  It's a wise decision.  You'd need a couple of fur lined jocks to spend the night with my beagles.  Another negative is the Lord may ask you one day why you lied to your wife.  That's a tough one for later.  If anyone has ideas on that subject, I'd be interested.  I haven't got a trip planned there.....not yet.

get the .223 and a heater for the dog house...  or insulate it, and get a Rotti.

Reload or buy ammo, the .223 is usually a lot cheaper and a bit more available nationwide. Less noise and recoil.  And one can NEVER have too many guns.

Well Pete, I have a big enough gunroom that when another shows up and it takes a while for it to be noticed.  So the line, "I got that one months ago" works to keep me safe.

I had a ejector model .223 and it was a tack driver out too 300 yards. I just recently picked up a .22-250 and with 55 gr winny factory loads it holds about a 2 inch group at 350 yards. That's as far as I've got it out to so far, but I love how flat shooting it is. I wish I still had the .223. Both rifles are great I'd buy the. .223 for $150 though.

I had one, Pudgey, a twin of your big boy... lived 11 years

then we rescued another one that had moved from an acreage to the city...   Buddy, he too was 11 or 12 when we got him.  he lived 2 years with us. ( we live on an acreage so he had LOTS of room to romp )

both ours got paralysis due to the issues in the backbone.  (Vet says they are very prone to that)

we put both down, buried one in the north 8, and the other's ashes were given back to the family we got him from, and they were spread out at his favourite running area.

I miss Pudgey and Buddy very much also.  My wife felt so safe with them around.
Rottis are the BEST!
When our current two mutts ( mini dachshund, and a Lab/Terrier X ) are gone, we'll get another Rotti.

seeing your pics made me choke up a bit...

Buy the .223 for $150 just because its a good deal.  :)

The .22-250 is a coyotes nightmare, especially if he stops inside of 400 yards to look back !

I gotta try a .222 one day, too.  :D

Do you hunt at 250 yards and farther a lot? do you reload? 223 is much cheaper. 22-250 is much longer. ear
