Buck shot in a 20ga?
« on: February 01, 2014, 03:12:17 PM »
As I understand it 00 and 000 buck shot doesn't stack nicely in a 20ga hull, so that's why you don't see 00 or 000 20ga shells for sale anywhere.  How big of a pellet can you load effectively in 20ga?

Same with me, #3 is all I have seen. Someone mentioned others but I haven't seen them.

If you want to shoot buckshot I'd stick with 16 or 12 ga. #1 or 00.

20 ga I can find is usually #4.

Never seen #4 in a 20 gauge.  I keep some in 12 gauge (27 pellets in 2 3/4") for coyotes.  All I've seen in 20 is #3 buck with 20 pellets per 2 3/4" shell.  Keep some of them for coyotes too.

#1 shoots REAL nice in my 16ga Savage 311 shorty!  ::) I haven't shot much #3 20ga in recent years. But I will as soon as I finish my 20g shorty build. ;)

Here #2 and #3 are all we see. Years ago I could get #0 buck in 20 ga. but not any more. I think the number of pellets is important with buck shot and in a small hull they stick to smaller shot size.

Number 3 buckshot in 20ga 3'' is nothing to laugh about. Each shot is equal to a 25 caliber ball, 20 of these should be all you need. If I were to go to 12 gauge I would use 2-3/4 number 1 buck, 16 pellets, 30 caliber.

One trait that is least understood is when you lengthen the shell in a bore you cause shot stringing and often more deformation of the shot .That's why the 10 ga has had a come back , better patterns over the 3.5 12 ga. with larger payloads  When you increase shot number you increase the weight of the payload thus. causing a lower shot speed . This is necessary to lower pressure. So often times a standard shell with a few less shot can be more effective or deadly. With buckshot it is better to have a close pattern that hits at the same time or very close to the same time than a long pattern . Maybe not as important on a standing deer but with a running deer it is.

I would add that in most cases the shot has less velocity than most bullets the same size so a #1 buck may be .30 cal. it does not have either the weight or speed of a rifle bullet and cannot deliver the energy to the target a rifle does at like ranges. Most buckshot starts out at 1350 fps or under . So in effect buck shot is dependent on multiple hits at the same time to deliver enough energy to do the job. And yes I have taken several deer with one pellet and consider them all lucky shots.

Not saying your wrong, but I would be greatly surprised if you got 25 00 buck for $13.00.  If you are correct, I'm going to Academy.

Some of the guys in my hunt club had some shells that were of lesser known manufactures and they did not work very well. Don't think it was that brand. But then I once got a box of Remington buckshot that one shell was folded /crushed and the shot was laying the box on top of it and the one next to it was almost that bad. Then there was the rem 3 inch #1's that rolled out the barrel so slow you could see it and stuck in a deer's hide . My dad killed the deer.

Cool your jets brother!!  NO ONE called you anything!!  You MUST admit this is a very good price and with ammo prices as they are seems as if the quantity purchased might have been in error if not price itself.

Your new here so may not know how to READ INTO some posts. We are friendly around here. No flaming or calling names.

That IS a great price. I wish I had that store near me so I too could get some.

I just picked up a few boxes last week.

410 was 6.99 for FIVE ROUNDS Winchester

12 was 5.99 for FIVE ROUNDS. Remington

12 ga S&B ( that I much prefer) was 3.99 per FIVE

13 & 9 for 25 is AWESOME PRICING!!!! That's just over .3 cents a round for 8$ stuff and .52 for the. 13$ compaired to almost 1.25 PER ROUND FOR 410!!!!!!

This is what I would expect. A bit cheaper than my five round boxes or a buck a round...

The lower prices (8$/25)are upwards of 70% cheaper!! That's twice retail markup!! Reall WOW pricing.

Three stores today... not a single 20g shell.  :( :( :( :(

BUT I picked up 50 Win OO Buck shot shells AND 5 ''breecher'' rounds for 11$!!!!!  It was ''used'' ammo unboxed loose. What do I care?? I store mine in MTM Plastic 25 round boxes anyhow!!  MUCH better if thrown in a back seat or pack!!

Tomorrow hopefully I can stop at one more shop I haven't been to in 9 months. MAYBE they have something...

I have a life time supply of 20 ga so I left them on the self for someone that needs them, but at that price ,I'll go back the middle of next week and if they are still there.......at that price they are mine.  I wouldn't trust them for HD, but they might be fun just to blast with.
