The 45/70 shows promise!
« on: February 02, 2014, 06:39:55 PM »
Took the 45/70 Handi to the range today. I tried out some H335 powder today. I had been trying H4198 before. I was in awe of how well the H335 worked! The first 3 rounds covered by stickys were sight in rounds. After that I shot for accuracy at 100 yards with the next 3 rounds. I only have a 4X Swift pistol scope on it, so it is hardly a rifle for chewing the bullseyes out of targets at that distance. Rather it's a hunting rifle. I'm going to reduce the powder charge by 1 grain. I'll see if there is an improvement, and if it's a little less punishing in the recoil department. I'm going to upgrade the stock recoil pad to a better one like a Kick-Eeze or a Limbsaver. That will make shooting this rifle a much more enjoyable experience. It was pretty cool! My shooting Buddy had never shot a 45/70 before. He loved it after the first round! This rifle rocks, big time! Any hog or deer than is unlucky enough to get in the way of one of these 300gr JHP's isn't going very far, that's for sure!

That is a very nice rifle.  I'm shooting the Rem. 300 gr. SJHP in my 16.5 inch shorty at about 2100 fps.  I haven't been able to chrony it because of weather and accumulated snow.  The recoil is fairly moderate compared to the 405.  I have only the factory recoil pads on both my .45-70s.  I might upgrade those as I get older and more sensitive ::)

I like the scout scope setup you have.  I wish I could use one properly.  You should be able to shoot with both eyes open which keeps you on a moving target.  I can no longer do that.  I have a vision loss in my right eye so my left takes over and I see next to nothing through the scope.

It's just a standard one for a Handi. I drilled and tapped the barrel for it myself.
