How to find interstate road conditions?
« on: February 03, 2014, 08:25:01 AM »
Is there a way of finding out what road conditions are like on a given stretch of interstate? I'm doing a road trip and I want to be able to see if there are icy conditions ahead. Thanks!

I just google the individual states for state road conditions.  NM illustrates which roads are closed, have warnings, and are clear.

Oh duh! Thanks! I just tried that for Kentucky and it's got a map of roads with winter driving conditions, closures, and even some traffic cameras.

Sounds like what I get for NM.  just be sure they are not "stale" and they are current.  I have found tjhat may roads are drivable which they show as questionable.  They tend to err on the side of caution.

Around here, I type in ODOT for Ohio, MDOT for Michigan. Probably work for about any state. If your a member of AAA, they probably have one too. gypsyman

I retired from MN/DOT. In a number of states if you search their web-sites you can probably find live camera feeds, which I bookmark before I travel. Also some have current weather and road conditions at interstate rest areas.
9-10 years ago I got a call at home in MN,from my oldest daughter asking for road conditions on, Snoquami Pass, in Washington State. I found a live video feed and gave her a traffic report via cell phone. She was traveling from Seattle to Spokane to visit her sister.

In many northern states you can access road conditions by dialing 511. You need to be in the state or a neighboring state.

I just found the web sites for the states I'll be driving through and got their traffic maps. As expected, the more northern states have really good maps for road conditions. Alabama doesn't have much of anything except to say where construction or closings are. It's nice to have this information. Thanks for the idea.
