Question about TC muzzle loaders.
« on: February 05, 2014, 03:58:15 PM »
Is the TC New Englander and the Grey Hawk, basically the same rifle, except for the stock (synthetic/wood), and (blue/stainless) steel barrel?  Or do I have it mixed up with the Pennsylvania Hunter?  I know one of them has a completely round barrel, like the Grey Hawk, and the other has flats.

The other question concerns if it is possible to change the caliber, by changing the barrel.  Would a different caliber barrel for the rifle just drop in?

I know you can switch barrels between TC muzzleloaders, that I picked up from reading P.A. Meyers posts.

NE & GH are the same. NE blue/wood, GH stainless/plastic. I have a GH on a NE stock, everything fit, except you must use the
NE butt plate. GH uses a pad. I had my butte plate satin nickel plated to match.

NE has a 1 inch round barrel only, all calibers [50,54,12g] will fit.

P.A. - I won a TC New Englander (blue) with synthetic stock off Gun broker.   I might have a lead on a TC Renegade stock (wood).  I was wondering if it would just drop in, or would I need to fit it?

I had the same thought a while back so I checked it out. it can probably be done but it won't be a drop-in as New Englander & Renegade tangs are entirely different animals. the N.E. tang is shorter & wider which would require widenin' in the front & fillin' in in the back along with re-drillin' the screw-holes. also, goin' from the round N.E. barrel to the octagon Renegade barrel channel would require a bit of fittin' & a lot of beddin' compound. about the only plus I could see is that the wedge-holes woulda been in the right place & the fore-end length woulda been about right.

luck & have a good'en friend, bubba.

Be patient, NE stocks should come around the online market often. I have also seen NE rust buckets very low. How are you at wood finishing?
A lot of beat-up stocks can be saved. Cracks or holes ruin any dollar value but can be repaired to good function.

Spring is on the way, P.A.
